Fake boulders, also known as artificial or faux boulders, have become a popular component of home landscaping. With careful planning fake boulders can appear quite natural and will add a unique look to your home¡¯s landscape, helping it to stand out from everyone else¡¯s.
What is a Fake Boulder?
A fake boulder is man-made object constructed to imitate a real boulder. Fake boulders are usually constructed by one of two methods. The first consists of a lightweight material such as polyurethane foam surrounded by a surface layer of concrete simulating the texture of rock. The second is made entirely of reinforced concrete. Fake boulders constructed by the second method are usually more realistic looking. However, due to their escalating popularity, methods and materials used to create fake boulders have improved dramatically and many fake boulders can pass for the real thing. It is even possible to make them your self for a custom look.
What are the Advantages?
First and foremost, fake boulders weigh less and are easier to transport and manipulate in the garden. A 3¡¯x3¡¯x3¡¯ foot boulder weighs one ton ¨C that¡¯s 2000 pounds! An artificial one made of reinforced concrete might weigh only 400 pounds, and one constructed of foam and concrete of course weighs even less. Fake boulders are also less expensive than the real thing.
Using Fake Boulders in Your Landscape
Fake boulders can be used in many ways. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Water Features
Fake boulders either alone or in combination with real stone, are especially suited to water features such as waterfalls, outdoor spas, small ponds and streams, and swimming pools when you want to create a naturalistic effect. Strategically placed boulders imbedded in the pool or spa deck can double as planting pockets for flowers and give an otherwise ordinary pool a distinctive character.
Focal Points and Accents
Alone or in small groups, fake boulders can be used as focal points to mark the entrance to a garden path, a gate, or even your driveway. They also provide nice accents along a path, when nestled among clumps of trees or shrubs. Smaller boulders can also be used to create markers or monuments, for example to mark locations of spring wildflowers or bulbs or even a family event such as a wedding.
Go Rustic
If you want to go for the rustic look, fake boulders in varying sizes can be used to recreate remnants of stone walls. Be sure to plant clumps of trees, shrubs or flowers along the wall to complete the look. Also in keeping with the rustic look, is the option to use a large boulder as a seat or even a small bench for two people, perhaps under a large tree.
Another idea is to find or make a boulder with a shallow depression, which can be placed under a drainpipe to collect rainwater and used to water your houseplants or herb garden.
Specialty Gardens
Boulders are often used when creating Japanese-style gardens, which typically replicate the natural landscape in an abstract way, such as using boulders to represent mountains or islands. Fake boulders can be used to design a rock garden planted with herbs or smaller perennials as well. A roof garden, where weight limits are an issue, is also an excellent place to incorporate fake boulders into your design.
Screening
Often there are features such as pipes, drains, lights, or even security cameras that you would like to conceal. Strategically placed fake boulders are useful for this purpose.
Helpful Hints
Tastefully done, using fake boulders in your landscape are one way to increase the value of your property inexpensively. The danger of course, is that they actually look fake. To avoid this problem, the boulders should be buried at least 6 inches into the ground. Better yet, between one quarter and one half of the boulder should be below ground. Don¡¯t sit them on top of the ground - unless you are trying to simulate a boulder field.
If you are using more than one boulder, cluster them in groups of odd numbers, for example three or five. And finally, boulders have ¡°good¡± and ¡°bad¡± sides to them so carefully look them over to see which side looks best to you. However you choose to use fake boulders in your landscape, you can be sure that they will provide a unique character to your property.
