If you are thinking about replacing the windows in your home, the amazing array of choices can be very overwhelming. Should you choose vinyl, wood or aluminum windows? Do you want your window to open and close the same way as your old windows or is there a better choice? Do you want to add a larger, more dramatic window or skylight?
There are a lot of reasons to replace the windows in your home. New windows obviously look better; they are also easier to clean and to open and they can save you a bundle on your energy bill. Nearly 40% of every household budget is spent on heating and cooling your home. New, more energy efficient windows can cut down on those costs for you, making window replacement a very good investment. New windows also dramatically improve the resale value of your house.
There are basically three types of windows that you can buy. They are vinyl, wood and aluminum. Each has it benefits and drawbacks. Vinyl windows are extremely durable and are also moderately priced. They are made from PVC and provide great energy-efficiency and are virtually maintenance free. They don¡¯t crack, rust, swell or rot, and are available in a wide variety of styles to suit any home.
The natural beauty of wood windows makes them extremely aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Wood is an excellent insulator, making the windows a good choice for cutting your energy bills. However, wood windows are more expensive than vinyl windows, and can react to the elements, like heat, cold and moisture. Wood windows require yearly maintenance and attention to keep them attractive and make them last.
The least expensive choice for replacement windows is aluminum ones. They are stronger than vinyl or wood windows, and do not shrink crack or rust. They are available in many different colors to complement your d¨¦cor. Aluminum windows are more susceptible to heat and cold, however, because aluminum is not a very good insulator.
Whatever type of windows you choose, it is important to research your choices. Visit a showroom or two and take a look at all of your options. Check out how the windows look and feel. Decide how you want your windows to open, such as casement or sliders. Do you want to install something more dramatic, like a bay window or a skylight? Talk with the salesman and discuss your options. Ask plenty of questions and find out about the energy-efficient rating for the windows you like. Look for the Energy Star rating, which is a nonbiased rating system that promotes energy efficient products. Finally, find out about warranties. You do not want windows that don¡¯t come with some type of warranty for installation and manufacturing defects.
Narrow down your choice of windows and then chose a company to install them. Make sure their people are certified to install the windows you¡¯ve chosen. Ask for references of previous work. Get an estimate in writing of how much the windows and installation will cost. It is important to protect yourself in the event of any complications that could arise. After the installation is completed to your satisfaction, sit back and enjoy those new windows. |
