Roof shingling is one of the few major repair jobs a do-it-yourself carpenter can do his or herself. There¡¯s nothing more satisfying than seeing the vast improvement you can get from just a day¡¯s worth of labor. Larger jobs may take longer, but shingling a damaged area, shed or garage roof can be accomplished in very little time and expense, saving you a great deal of money.

     This article will discuss some of the safety precautions a beginner should take before attempting a roofing job and discuss various types of shingles and their relative benefits. A novice should consult professional workbooks before attempting the job, but this article should help the beginner understand some basic principles of roofing.

     It is not uncommon to discover your fear of heights at the worst possible moment: When you¡¯re at the crest of a roof looking down. Having the proper equipment and setting up your environment correctly will go a long way towards alleviating your fears, but if you find yourself feeling dizzy or weak, reconsider the job. Roofing can be dangerous work, and you don¡¯t want to endanger yourself just because you couldn¡¯t admit to your fear of heights or didn¡¯t prepare properly for the job. 

     Choose a strong ladder long enough to reach the crest of your roof when extended fully. Always use roof brackets and consider the use of safety belts (lifelines), catch platforms, scaffold platforms, eave barriers and / or roof jacks for any roof higher than 20 feet or roofs with pronounced slopes. Make sure your scaffolding planks are at least 12 inches wide and that your brackets fit the pitch of the roof.

     Always keep your area free of clutter and keep an eye on your tools. (Use a tool belt whenever possible.) Remember to cover any skylights or windows that may be struck by falling debris and try to keep items away from the edge of the roof. Place a tarp underneath the area you intend to work on and try to keep trash contained to that area. Nothing is worse than finding roofing nails on your lawn six months after you¡¯ve finished your job.

     There are four basic kinds of shingles: Asphalt, metal, slate and wood. Additional types ¨C such as photovoltaic shingles that use the sun¡¯s heat to generate power ¨C are available, but for the basis of this article only the four most common shingles will be discussed. Shingles are listed from the least expensive to the most costly for your convenience. 

     Asphalt shingles are the most commonly used shingles in the United States. They are easy to install, come in a variety of colors, and are durable and versatile. Asphalt shingles come in either organic-mat or fiberglass-mat. Fiberglass-mat asphalt shingles are thinner, lighter and more fire resistant than the organic counterpart, though organic-mat shingles last longer. 

     Wooden shingles can be made from a variety of different woods, though the most common type is cedar. Cedar roofs were very common at the turn of the century, but now almost all roofs are shingled in asphalt. Cedar is an attractive shingle, but care must be taken to find units taken from a mature tree. The older the wood, the longer the cedar shingle will remain rot free.

     Cedar shingles are also less standardized than asphalt units, and as a result it takes longer to lay them on a roof. You will also need to finish your cedar roof and inspect it routinely for signs of rot, moss and insect nests. The roof will periodically need to be chemically washed to rid it of damaging agents and retain its luster. The substantial investment you will have in your cedar shingles should encourage you to take care of your roof: Wood shingles cost two to three times as much as asphalt shingles.

     Like wooden shingles, metal shingles can be made from a wide array of different materials including aluminum, copper and stainless steel. Aluminum shingles have been associated with industrial uses and can often be seem on older farmhouses, while copper shingles are both distinctive and beautiful. Metal shingles are durable, resistant and can be quite attractive on the right house, especially since they now come in a variety of colors.

     Working with metal shingles can be very different than applying traditional asphalt shines, and care should be taken to follow the manufacturer¡¯s directions. Care should also be taken when trimming or fastening metal shingles, since the edges can be quite sharp. The cost of metal shingles varies greatly depending on the material used, but figure on a rough estimate of five or six times what you would spend on asphalt shingles. 

     Slate shingles are the most costly and arguably the most unique option available to do-it-yourself roofers. The most durable material available, slate shingles weigh much more than asphalt shingles and require more skill and patience during instillation. Often actually made from stone or a composition that resembles stone, slate shingles can be unforgiving and difficult to work with. Cutting and sizing slate requires additional specialty tools and slate is very easy to damage.

     On the other hand, slate makes a kind of personal statement about the homeowner and shows old world craftsmanship and attention to detail. Many older homes have slate shingles that have withstood 100 years or more, which shows just how long lasting good work can be. Slate is considerably more expensive than other shingles, but for those willing to put the time and effort into learning how to work with the material, it can very satisfying and individualistic material to work with.
