Dank.  Unused.  Dark.  Scary.  These are things many of us think of when we hear the word basement.  If you would like to have your guest and neighbors use words like dazzling, fun, unusual and innovative, then choose one of these basement refinishing ideas.  From the traditional to the offbeat, a new basement is just around the corner and down some stairs.

1. Create an additional bedroom.  You saw Greg Brady take over the attic on The Brady Bunch to give him more privacy as he reached young adulthood.  The basement offers another alternative for those without convertible attic space.  Depending on the inhabitant, you could even convert that space into an efficiency style apartment.  The luxury of many basements is that they offer easier access to pipes and wiring, making installation of bathroom facilities and even a small kitchenette possible.  If the basement space has its own separate interest you can even use that revamped living space as a rental unit!

2. Create a high tech haven.  Ever wish you had that big screen TV and surround sound in someplace other than your living room?  Use that basement space to create your own multimedia experience.  Go all out and put in a popcorn machine, a small fridge and slope the floor for tiered seating and you have your own mini theater.  You could also expand the electronics, add some comfortable couches and cool lighting and have your own media lounge to kick back in on those weekend nights.

3. Create a fitness spa.  Divide that basement space up and create your own spa experience at home.  If the entire family uses it you could even pay for the basement conversion quickly in saved gym fees.  Add workout equipment, a portioned massage/relaxation area and close off one end and install a small steam room.

4. Create a workroom.  Do you have a hobby?  Don¡¯t just shove things around in that basement, take the time to refinish it and create your own artistic realm.  A computer, easy chairs and more can create a writer¡¯s haven.  Bright lights, a portioned darkroom area and some backdrops can create a photography studio.  Whether a painter, a crafter, a scrap booker or quilter, that basement can serve as a new home for your creative outlets.

5. Create a game room.  Picture a bar at one end of the basement space, billiards table, poker table and dartboard at the other.  You have just created your own game room.  This option even allows you to leave the walls and ceiling unfinished to create a quaint bar atmosphere.  You could also finish the walls off with wood paneling and beam ceilings and give it a more lodge-like feel.

6. Create a wine cellar.  Of all options, this one allows you to invest in other things besides the renovations, namely the wine.  Keep in mind you will need to put some money into assuring that the basement is whether proofed and temperature controlled to maintain the wine, but in general your investment should be minimal.  You can increase the flair of you new wine cellar, and create a small tasting room at one end of the basement closest to the stairs and suddenly have a showcase area.
