A homebuilder can choose from so many different kinds of exterior wall coverings.  Most are very easy care materials and look great on any home.  With each different material used, a completely different look can be achieved.  The wall coverings used on a homes exterior has a strong effect on the overall appearance of a home.  A homes exterior wall covering should be chosen with great care.

One type of siding that looks great is cedar shingle siding.  Cedar is very pest and weather resistant so will be good where termites and harsh weather tend to be a problem.  Also cedar naturally weathers well to a pretty silver or gray color.  It does not have to be painted or stained for a nice appearance.  It can be sealed with a water repellent before application, for better protection.  Cedar siding comes smooth or rough, whichever look you prefer.  

Today cedar shingle siding has properties that have a high degree of  protection against warping.  Look for quality shingles that are free from knots and other defects.  It is well worth the money you spend when you choose high quality shingles.  Shingles come in different widths, from three inches to fourteen inches,  for an overall better look.  Wall shingles also come in different lengths from sixteen inches to twenty-four inches.  Some cedar shingles are hand split and come in lengths of eighteen inches up to thirty-two inches.  

Wood shingles have different grades.  All four grades are used for different purposes and have a different amount of defects.  Some shingles are made from the heart of the wood and have all edge grain.  This is your best quality cedar shingle.  One thing you want to look for is that all the edges are parallel.  This is done by a machine and makes for a better application.  You want tight fitting joints for your homes exterior walls.  

You can apply cedar shingle siding two different ways.  Some use the single course method where the shingles are put on like shingles on a roof.  This method is good for areas where weather exposure is harsh but not extended.  The walls have two layers of shingles at every point.  They are placed over wood sheathing and building paper for weather resistance.  The double course method is more frequently used because of the shadow lines it creates and its durability for long periods.  For areas that have long harsh weather conditions this method is ideal.  Cheaper under coursing shingles are put under the more high quality top shingles.  The outer course is half inch lower than the under course.  So, the bottom under course shingles can be number three grade and the top ones can be number one grade.  

Always use rust resistant nails when applying cedar shingles to a home exterior.  Nailing strips should be used when the application of the shingles are to go over anything but wood sheathing.  

Shakes made of cedar come three different ways.  There is the handsplit-resawn, the taper split and the straight split.  Today you can buy cedar shingle siding in four by eight foot sheets, like plywood.  It is applied similar to plywood and saves a lot of time and gets you a fairly decent look of cedar shakes.  

Red cedar holds up well to nature and will weather to a silver or gray.  You can buy bleaching agents to speed up this process and the wood will turn an antique silver gray.  Just remember quality wood and quality finishes are recommended.  You will actually save money and time in the long run.
