There are many ways to design and create glass tile mosaic patterns. If you are stuck on how to get started or aren't sure what method is best for you, this article is likely to spark your interest and get you going.
To design glass tile mosaic patterns by drawing, it is best to use graph paper (also known as grid paper because the paper is covered in lines that make a grid). Graph paper is good for mimicking the pieces of glass tile because you just fill in each square with color until you like what you see. This is especially great if you will be using small squares of tile. However, if you will be using broken pieces instead, graph paper will still be a great aid with your design. Just keep in mind that the finished product will look slightly different than the drawn plan. You will also need colored pencils to create the design. Colored pencils are best because they can be erased if you make a mistake or change your mind about something as you are going along. Once you are happy with your design, hang it on the wall and step back from it. Mosaics are like impressionism paintings; they look different from far away then they do close up. You want to make sure you like it from both perspectives.
Some people like to make their mosaic designs by simply placing the glass tile pieces onto the surface the tiles will be adhered to. Granted this can only be done on a flat surface, not if you are doing a mosaic on a vertical surface such as a backsplash. All you have to do to design this way is arrange the tile pieces, and rearrange until you get the look you are going for. Then adhere each piece individually so you don't forget where it goes in the pattern. If you will be using an adhesive that requires the surface to be prepared all at once, take pictures of the final design. With digital cameras so convenient, this is an easy way to keep track of your work. You can also use a digital camera to take pictures of your mosaic design as you are arranging it. This way if you liked it the way you had it 5 minutes ago you can check the picture to help you return the design to it's previous position.
You can also use a computer program to help you design your pattern. Any art or paint type program will do. Either use different shapes placing them together to form a picture or use large and small dots creating a pointillism effect similar to mosaics. Then print and use as a map to create your mosaic.
There are so many mosaic patterns and ideas out there. Mosaics have been around for centuries. Archeologists have found mosaics that are so incredible the people depicted in them look almost real. If you want to do a mosaic that looks like a picture be sure to use lots of different colors of tiles just like the ancient mosaics. This will give the finished mosaic more depth and life. Most mosaics have a pattern around the edge. Sometimes a mosaic is only a pattern. These patterns can be as simple as two different colors of tiles alternating or more complex like diamonds, triangles, leaves on vines, etc. Some people prefer symmetrical patterns that are completely consistent and others prefer the random placement of tiles. These are all acceptable. There is no wrong way to design a mosaic. If it looks appealing to you then you know you did it right. |
