Arts and crafts can be enjoyed by people of all ages, not just the youth.  There is a great range of activities one can learn and many hands-on skills to develop.  One of the most rewarding and simple arts and crafts activities is latch-hooking.  Latch-hooking is a very easy process that requires only one tool, yarn threads, and a design.  Unlike needle-point, which can be very time-consuming and for many, frustrating, some latch-hooks can be completed in several hours if given the proper attention.  Latch-hook is easier for some people to do than fine needlework because the materials are larger and cause less strain on the eyes and fingers. 

Latch-hook designs come in a range of sizes.  There are small twelve-by-twelve inch patterns and there are rugs that can reach twelve-by-twelve feet.  If you are embarking on a latching mission for the first time it is advised that you begin small to see if you enjoy it.  You can find small latch-hook patterns in any craft store and you may purchase them online as well.  You can find a range of patterns as well; from Disney images to impressive seascapes, latch-hook patterns run the whole gamut.   In addition, there is wool and acrylic yarn to choose from.  Wool is typical for smaller projects, while acrylic is often used on the larger rugs.  

Once you have picked out and purchased your design all you will need is a latch-hook tool.  These can be purchased for a few dollars at any craft store.  While the package most likely has directions for latching, here is the basic idea of the process.  Laying out the strands of wool or acrylic in front of you, place the canvas on your lap.  In your right hand hold the tool, in the left, a thread.  Start at the top-left corner and work down then towards the right.  First loop a piece of yarn around the hook, behind the latch.  Then push the hook down through one square and up the one immediately above until the latch is through.  Next, pull the hook back slightly, just far enough until the latch begins to close. Bring the two ends of yarn across, into the eye of the hook. Pull the hook back slowly the latch will close and grab the yarn. Release the two ends of yarn and pull hook out. Keeping the two ends even, tighten the knot by giving it a slight pull.  With the latch-hook tool and design in front of you, this process will become very easy to comprehend and perfect. 

Not only is latch-hooking easy, but it can produces a range of finish products.  You can use the binding tape to formulate a simple rug, but you are welcome to turn your work of art into a pillow, a wall-hanging, even a toilet cover.  Almost anything imaginable is possible if you allow yourself the flexibility in tools and material to achieve it.  Turning a latch-hook into a pillow is relatively simple.  After using the binding tape to seal and tidy the edges sew the canvas to fabric that fits the size.  If your latch-hook is twelve inches by twelve inches, use fabric that is thirteen inches by twenty five inches.  Be sure to sew it tightly to the corners.  When you have stitched around all four sides, staple or pin remaining fabric to the front to form a large pocket.  Cross-stitch or machine sew this so that all that you must do is stuff the pillow with synthetic material and sew the top end.  Wall-mats are even simpler to make.  Use the binding tape to tidy up the latch-hook.  You may choose to affix a sting with a loop at the end and hang it in this manner, or you may use double-sided tape to mount it on the wall.  Either method will produce a handsome addition to your house.
