If you love your dogs as much as I do, you want to do everything you can to protect them and keep them safe. Being the proud owner of two spoiled rotten five-year old German Shepherds, my husband and I wanted to install a fence that would keep them safe while we were away from home or at work.
To give me piece of mind while we were not home with the dogs, we decided to install a five foot chain link fence around the building that the dogs live in. We installed dog doors on the side of the building to let the dogs get outside when they wanted to. Once outside, the fence would keep them in a contained shaded area. They have a wonderful set-up; the building they live in is as big as a two-car garage.
Installing dog doors in your home or building is nice for your dog because it allows them to have access to get outside without disturbing you to let them out every few minutes. The doors have a cover you can slip into place if you don¡¯t want the dog to go outside for some reason. The doors have flaps that keep the wind and cold weather outside while keeping your home warm inside.
There are many containment options available for dog owners. Before you decide what is best for your dog, you have many things to take into consideration. One thing you want to take into consideration is the size of your dog. Since our dogs are big, I wanted a fence that I knew they could not jump over - that¡¯s why we installed the five foot fence. If you have a small dog, you wouldn¡¯t want to install something that tall or expensive.
Hidden dog fences or invisible fences are another effective way to keep your dog in a certain area in your yard. This type of fence will keep them free of chains and leashes. If you decide on this type of containment it will require you to train your dog to stay inside boundaries. It would be a good idea not to just stick your fence in the back yard where your dog can¡¯t see what¡¯s going on. Dogs like to see what is going on, so if you include your front yard in the fencing, they will be able to see who is coming and going. This will make your dog less frustrated than being pinned up somewhere where they can¡¯t see people coming and going.
Installing these types of fences is easy. You can design the areas that you want the dog in and areas you don¡¯t want them to have access to - like around a swimming pool or flower garden. Once you have decided on the exact area you want the dog to stay in, place your wire underground. Typically this wire only needs to be placed several inches underground. These types of fences will require you to buy a collar for your dog and a control box that can be set on various settings to let the dog know when it is near the fence. To begin their training, you will need to place small flags where the boundaries of the fence are and train them to stay inside the flags. Once they have learned their boundaries you can remove the flags.
Be sure when training your dog to give them praise when they do something good, and use properly timed corrections when they don¡¯t. Don¡¯t ever hit your dog or be abusive to them. When you praise your dog their confidence level will skyrocket.
Another option, depending upon the size of your dog, is to purchase pre-made kennels so you can keep your dog inside your home or in a certain area on your property. These kennels can be small enough for an eight pound dog and large enough for a two hundred pound dog.
There are a lot of things to consider when deciding on a fence for your dog. Be sure to choose one that will work for you and your dog.
