Nutritious commercial dog food is hard to come by in a $25 billion a year industry with its focus on profits.  However, the Association of American Feed Control Officials, AAFCO, has set standards by which a brand can be classified as complete and balanced.

Naturally, the very best diet for your dog is one you prepare yourself from both wholesome meats and vegetables.  But if you don¡¯t have the time to spend preparing a daily meal, there are some guidelines set by the AAFCO to help you to choose the best available brand.

Guidelines for Choosing a Commercial Dog Food

Make sure the label has an AAFCO guarantee which clearly states feeding tests or feeding profiles.  There are two ways that a food can be certified by the AAFCO.  One way is by meeting a list of nutrients or contents.  Another way is by passing actual feeding tests.  Feeding tests, actual clinical studies, although not foolproof, are preferable.

Never buy a food containing by product meal, by product meat or a digest.    By products are the least expensive of all dog food ingredients, and they often contain animal organs or parts banned for human consumption.  Instead, look for USDA approved human grade ingredients.  The name of a meat, chicken, beef, or lamb, should be the first ingredient listed on the label.

Also avoid generic fats or proteins, animal fat or poultry fat.  A specific fat should be listed, such as beef fat, chicken fat, or lamb fat.  The generic term means that the fat is coming from a variety of sources which are not necessarily human grade.

No preservatives, BHA, BHT, or Ethoxyquin, should be listed along with no artificial colors, sugars or sweeteners.  Good dog food does not contain corn syrup, sucrose, ammoniated glycyrrhizin or propylene glycol.  In fact, propylene glycol, added to keep some chewy dog foods moist, can be poisonous to your dog if it is digested in large quantities.

Be sure to get as few grains as possible.  Good dog food should have a whole meat source for its major or first ingredient.  Watch for labels which spilt up the grain listing ground yellow corn and corn gluten meal as separate ingredients.  The grain quantities added together may mean more grain than meat in the food.

Finally, you may want to check for added taurine.  Taurine is essential to the eyesight of cats so it was added to cat food in the 1970¡¯s.  Only recently, have some dog food companies begun to add it.  New studies have found some correlation between taurine deficiencies and cardiomyopathy in dogs.  At this time, there is no definitive study, but you may want to do some research on your own or check with your veterinarian about its importance to your dog¡¯s health.

Remember don¡¯t purchase generic or store brands:  They contain poor quality ingredients.  Also, avoid light, senior, or special formulas as they may contain chemicals or inadequate fat which might harm your dog.

Storing Your Dog Food

After you have determined its freshness by checking the expiration date and giving it a sniff, store dry dog food in an airtight, plastic container and store canned dog food in a glass container.  Be sure to refrigerate the canned dog food.

Supplementing Commercial Dog Food

Add fish oil or salmon oil, an important source of Omega-3.  Because Omega-3 does not survive in light, hear or air, it will quickly fade from a commercial dog food.  Necessary for your dog¡¯s heart, nervous system, and immune system, serve approximately 1000 mg of fish oil per 30 pounds of weight.  To increase its effectiveness, also add vitamin E ¨C 100 IU for small dogs, 200 IU for medium dogs, and 400 IU for large dogs.

Probiotics are also essential when feeding commercial dog food.  They are helpful bacteria which live in your dog¡¯s intestines and which promote healthy digestion.  It is especially important to supplement with probiotics if your dog has had a recent bout of diarrhea or if your dog has taken a recent course of antibiotics.  These events rob his body of probiotics, and they can leave him prone to digestive and intestinal illness.  Experts recommend Berte¡¯s Ultra Probiotic Powder, but a human supplement purchased at a local health food store will suffice.

Finally, consider making one or two meals a week at home so you can choose the best quality ingredients.  For example, if you feed a dry dog food, try combining ? dry food with ? meat, like canned fish, hamburger, ground turkey or beef chunks.  Add some ground up vegetables, a tablespoon or two of whole milk yogurt or a raw egg and dinner is almost served.  Save a tiny bit, ? teaspoon, of ground eggshell as the final addition for calcium. 

Monitor Your Dog¡¯s Health

Sudden changes in your dog¡¯s appetite, weight, stool, urine, water intake or color of coat may signal a problem with his food.  If any of these symptoms occur, consult a veterinarian.
