Planning and creating landscaping in the south can be overwhelming. The weather and soil conditions are favorable to a host of plants and flowers, so options are many and varied.

The best way to get started on a landscape plan is to drive around the area and to note attractive yards and eye appealing presentations on public property. Take a notebook and jot down notes and a digital camera to capture specific designs. 

After getting some ideas, do some research. The local library should have a good collection of books including information on local plants, flowers, gardening, and landscaping. Online sites also offer great information geared for specific areas of the country. In fact, many include forums where it¡¯s possible to ask questions and get answers from local experts. 

Information that should be listed in your notebook before embarking on a landscape project includes:

1.  Zone Number for the Area ¨C During the early part of the twentieth century Sunset Magazine devised a numbering system to reflect the temperature conditions throughout the United States. Plants and flowers can be selected and planted by checking the zone numbers. A zone 6 area (cooler) is quite different from a zone 9 (more tropical) area. Zones vary within a state or region. North Carolina includes areas of 6, 7, and 8. A specific plant may fare well in one county but not so well in the next.

2.  Native Plants and Trees ¨C Plants and trees native to an area will be the most successful over the long haul. Natives require little energy and effort. Plant local vegetation and a yard practically takes care of itself

3.  Invasive Plants and Trees ¨C Nothing is more frustrating than planting something that takes over a yard. Drive through the south and note areas infested with Kudzu. The vines choke out plants and even trees. Be certain that you know the area invasives, or you may be pulling up bamboo shoots or wisteria spouts for years.

Armed with some of the basics and with some general ideas, contact the local Agricultural Extension Service or Cooperative Extension Service. Congress created this system which involves the one-hundred land grant universities in the country providing assistance early on to rural families and now to the community at large. Extension agents can answer your questions and can provide a host of information pamphlets covering a range of topics. Most offices also provide soil testing. Drop a sample by the office and get a detailed report as well as assistance in building up the soil for more successful landscaping.

Good yards begin with good soil. As you¡¯re planning your landscape, begin to build the soil. The better the foundation, the better the yard will look in the long run.

Don¡¯t overlook the neighbors when gathering information. Most gardeners are thrilled to share information and even plant starts. If you¡¯re new to the neighborhood, this is a good way to make new friends while also learning a lot about the land and how to work with your own patch of yard.

Once you have some basic plans in mind and a working knowledge of your soil and plants, begin to sketch out the yard. You don¡¯t have to be an artist to develop a basic plan of action. If you¡¯re intimated by the thoughts of simply putting pencil to paper and sketching, then buy a computer program and simply plug in the dimensions and then add the details.

Unless your yard is quite small, break the plans down to small areas. It¡¯s better to concentrate and develop one area at a time. Otherwise it can become very frustrating. Many a yard has ended up looking like an unmade bed after an over ambitious plan was started and then given up as hopeless. 

Remember that a yard is an ever growing and ever changing project. If something doesn¡¯t work out, that¡¯s fine. It¡¯s easy to shift gears and try something new. The joy is in the planning, digging, the creating. If you ever reach the point where you can sit back and say, ¡°This is perfect,¡± then you¡¯re probably not a real gardener at heart.
