Quilters often use products in their craft that were originally intended for other purposes. One of those products is freezer paper – the kind with plastic on one side. Freezer paper is especially useful for hand-sewing appliques.

Freezer paper can be purchased on a roll from the grocery store, but it has also been discovered by craft companies. You can find packages of it in craft and quilting stores cut into 8 ½” x 11” sheets, so that you can easily use it in your inkjet or laser printer. You can also cut letter-sized sheets from the roll, and it is less expensive.

Let’s make an applique using freezer paper. You will need the following supplies:

- Cotton fabric for the applique

- Cotton fabric for the background

- Plastic-backed freezer paper

- Pencil

- Computer and printer (optional)

- Iron and ironing board

- Paper scissors

- Fabric scissors

- Needle

- Thread to match applique fabric

Begin by drawing or printing your design on the paper side of the freezer paper. For a beginner, use a simple shape without any long, thin areas or sharp points. A heart shape is good to begin with.

Cut the design out on the lines.

With your iron set on  the “cotton” setting, without steam, press the cut-out shape to the back side of the applique fabric. Make sure the plastic side of the freezer paper is down, or you will make a mess of your iron!

Draw a line on the fabric ¼” away from the edge of the freezer paper. Cut the shape out on the line.

Position the shape where you want it on the background fabric, and pin it down, paper side down.

Begin sewing in the middle of a long, straight area. To begin, fold the fabric edge under the paper and take a very small stitch through the folded edge of the fabric, keeping the paper free. Do not make a knot in the thread. Instead, pull the thread through until you have about 1" hanging free. Stick the needle through the thread about ½” from the end. When you pull it tight, it will hold, without creating a bump like a knot would. Tuck the free end of the thread under the applique. 

Put the needle back in straight down from where you took your first stitch. Go down through the background. Come back up about 1/8” away from the first stitch. Keeping the applique fabric folded under the paper, take another stitch through the fold, keeping the paper free. Again, put the needle back in straight down from where you just came up. This will keep the stitches almost invisible, especially if you only catch a few threads each time you go through the fold. Go all the way around the applique in this manner. As you go around curves, you will have to adjust the fabric that you fold under as necessary to make it lie flat. When you come to an “inside” corner, such as at the top of a heart, you will have to clip the seam allowance – cut a straight line from the edge of the fabric to the edge of the paper. This will allow the fabric to lay flat when it is turned under. When you come to an “outside” corner, such as at the bottom of a heart, be sure to take a stitch right at the end of the point. This will help keep the point “pointy.”

When you get back to where you started, pull your needle out on the back side. Take a tiny stitch, and leave a loop. Put the needle through this loop, then put it through the second loop that was just made by putting the needle through the first loop. Pull it tight, and you have knot that doesn’t leave a bump. Cut the thread about ¼” away from the knot.

Now, take a small, sharp pair of scissors, and cut a slit in the back of the applique. Gently work the paper out. Freezer paper does not stick tightly to the fabric, so it is easily worked loose.

Turn the whole thing over, press if necessary, and you have a beautiful applique!
