So many poker games, so few dealers. This article will illustrate how to properly deal from the shuffle to the final discard and deal, so that the game is the thing, not the dealer.

Dealers are very similar to officials at any sporting event: if no one notices them, they are doing their job.  Also, it is critical as a dealer to KNOW THE RULES.  If there are any questions or disputes, you really MUST know the answers, or you cannot deal.

First and foremost is the shuffle.  Most people can easily split the cards into to virtually equal piles, bringing them together with an "inside/outside" shuffle.  But permanently bending the cards becomes a problem if you are not skilled in this area.  So another form of shuffling is the "wash", which is how it is done in  casinos.

Place and spread the cards face down in front of you, and make big "wax on/wax off" circles slowly but efficiently for about 10 - 15 seconds.  This is a completely satisfactory and acceptable way to sufficiently randomize the cards.  Then, bring them together and place the deck in front of you.

Offer the deck to the the player to your left to "cut".  They will pick one or several cards off the top, and place them face down next to the deck.  Or they will simply tap the top of the deck, essentially saying "they're good, you can deal".  If the player DOES "cut", place the deck left behind by the cut on top of the cards that were pulled by the play, and begin to deal.

At this point, you deal the cards one at a time, starting with the player to your left, face down, until all players have five cards. (BE AWARE: THIS IS FOR 5 CARD DRAW ONLY).  At this point, all players, starting with the player to your left, bets, and then all other players either fold, call, or raise.  Players may also "check" if no one before them has placed a bet for them to call, but once a bet is placed, you must either fold, call, or raise.

Then all players discard zero, 1, 2, or 3 cards (four if you have an ace, but the player must show the ace), receive their "draw" cards, and bet once more.

The player with the highest hand wins the pot, which is pushed toward the winner by the dealer.  If a player makes a bet and no one calls it, then the player who made the bet wins, but does not have to show unless they wish to show. And then the process begins all over again, with the "dealer chip" moving one space to the left, with THAT player now becoming the first player dealt to.

There are other rules of etiquette that must be known by the dealer, such as speeding up play, limiting trash talking between players, settling betting disputes, and generally keeping control of a highly volatile game. Remember, these are players who are gambling MONEY, something that we all work very hard for and hate to lose but love to win.  Do not be personal or take anything personally, because you are the dealer, who is neutral and best.
