Although the autumn is not a big gift-giving season, you can still use the lazy autumn months to make wrapping paper for later in the year.  Try this craft with your kids if you like to make homemade wrapping paper or if you have a lot of apples hanging around from apple picking!  In order to make this craft, you will need the following materials:

-Apples

-Sharp knife

-Plain white packing paper

-Paint

-Paper plates

-Newspaper

-Paper towels

Step One: Pick up some apples from the local supermarket or go apple picking with your children and pick up apples there!  Try to get a variety of apple sizes, as this will add to the design of the wrapping paper.

Step Two: Cover your working surface with newspaper so that you do not get paint everywhere!  Try to go with at least two layers of newspaper.

Step Three: Have an adult cut the apples into different pieces.  Remember: kids can get hurt very easily if they do not know how to use a knife properly!  Have the children help you with this part by telling you where to cut the apples.  Try cutting two of different sizes along the horizontal line, two across the vertical lines, and some into segments.  If you have any leaves from the stems, do not throw them away!  You can use them, too!  Blot each segment of apple onto a paper towel so that the surface is more dry than juicy.

Step Four: Cut off a sheet of the white packing paper.  Try to cut off pieces of several different sizes so that you are not limited when it is time to wrap the presents!  You can find this type of paper in entire rolls at your local office supply store.  Pour different colors of paint into different paper plates.

Step Five: Dip the different segments of the apples into the different colors of paint.  Dab off the excess paint onto a paper towel, and then use the apple to stamp on the packing paper.  You can stamp out different patterns, or simply go crazy by stamping everywhere.  You may want to have your kids wear paint smocks, as this craft can get very messy!  Don’t forget to stamp the apple leaves if you have them.

Step Six: Once you have finished making a design, let the packing paper dry.  When it dries completely, you can use it to wrap up presents!

Tips:

-The paint colors really make a difference for this craft.  Try using autumn colors for people with birthdays during the autumn months.  Red and green are great colors to use if you are making the wrapping paper for the holidays.  Be creative!

-You can use this craft to show how different apples can look depending on the way they are cut.  Kids are amazed by the star pattern of seeds inside the apple.

-You can also use fall leaves to stamp patterns with the apples.

-If you don’t mind a huge mess, try sprinkling glitter over the paint as it is drying.
