Living in an urban area where you may not have a garden or even much of a yard does not mean you cannot enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. Many apartment dwellers and condo owners make use of their decks or balconies for smaller versions of gardens ¨C flower or vegetable ¨C and enjoy the act of crating and maintaining almost as much as the beauty of their private garden paradises. 

Any small outdoor area can be transformed into a garden paradise with a little planning. First, decide how much of your outdoor area you can give up for your gardening. If you want to keep the majority of the floor space, trellises, window boxes, and hanging plants are best because they take up little room, but offer a large amount of area for growing. 

If you have room to use some of your outdoor floor space for the garden paradise, you can use larger planters and pots of a variety of sizes to create varying layers of depth and height. This also works well in corners of patios or balconies where you want some greenery, but you want to keep it confined to one area. 

Once you decide how much room you can use for your garden, measure it. Also take note of how much sun the area receives, if the sun is mostly in the morning or afternoon, and if the area receives rain or is sheltered. 

Before you head to the local nursery or garden store, you should have in mind what you wish to accomplish. If you wish to have roses or trees in your small garden area, ask where you can find miniatures of the usual plants. The miniatures are beautiful, bloom brightly, and the miniature fruit trees even will produce edible fruits for you just as the larger versions do. When purchasing plants and flowers for planters, you may see larger, planted plants that are nice and colorful. The trick to saving money is to try to go to store early in the season and purchase these same types of plants in smaller containers or flats that are less costly. Then, you can plant these items and watch them grow into the larger plants you saw at the store. Another thing to consider is to plant seeds in small pots inside your home during the winter and early spring. By the time you need to get to work on your garden paradise, you will have plants that are ready to head outdoors and you will have saved yourself quite a bit of money. 

When it comes to arranging the garden, pick a focal point. This could be a trellis that runs up the wall at the end of your garden area or a large pot planted with tall flowers or grasses. Once you pick a focal point and decide where it will be placed, the rest of your plants will seem to ¡°fit¡± around the main attraction. Pots in which you place single plants or a collection of grasses, plants, and flowers usually look best when clustered into groups of 3 or 5; odd numbers are more pleasing on the eye than even numbers sitting in a row. Finally, when planting flowers be sure to purchase colors that complement each other (for example: orange and red) or contrast (such as: yellow and blue) in order to make your garden eye pleasing and keep that element of design in your newly created space. 

If you wish to add a portion of your garden area to plants you can eat or cook with, consider planting herbs. Most herbs grow well in small spaces and can be taken indoors if the weather gets too cold. This will make your garden area not only a beautiful place to relax but also will enhance your cooking.
