Ribbon jewelry continues to be all the rage, especially for teens and the young at heart. While you can find many great designs in the stores, if you use a little creativity and a few of these tips, you can make your very own unique designs. This is a fun activity to do with your family or just on your own. You can choose whatever color ribbon you like to begin your project. For an elegant design, you may choose solid black. For a fun and preppy design, you may choose some brighter colors and patterns, such as a green and pink striped ribbon. All of the supplies mentioned below can be found at most craft stores.
Ribbon Necklace Supplies:
Ribbon of your choice (your desired necklace length plus one half inch)
Matching thread
Needle
Necklace clasp
Pendant of your choice
1. Cut the ribbon to your desired necklace length plus one half inch.
2. Fold the two ends of the ribbon under about a quarter of an inch and sew a small hem in each end. This will prevent any future ribbon fraying.
3. Slide your pendant onto the ribbon. Instead of a pendant, you may also use a large bead or several large beads.
4. Using your thread, sew one end of the ribbon onto half of the necklace clasp. Make sure to loop the thread through the clasp several times to make the connection strong. Tie your thread knot on the underside of the ribbon and clip off any remaining thread. Perform the same process on the other end of the ribbon with the other half of the necklace clasp.
5. Your ribbon necklace is now complete!
Ribbon Bracelet Supplies:
Ribbon of your choice (your desired bracelet length plus one half inch)
Matching thread
Needle
Necklace clasp
Large decorative beads (quantity of your choice, but three to five work well)
1. Cut the ribbon to your desired bracelet length plus one half inch.
2. Fold the two ends of the ribbon under about a quarter of an inch and sew a small hem in each end. This will prevent any future ribbon fraying.
3. Slide your beads onto the ribbon and center the beads on the ribbon.
4. Tie the ribbon at both ends of the beads. This will prevent the beads from sliding around and will add two decorative knots to your design.
6. Your ribbon bracelet is now complete!
Ribbon Watch Supplies:
Ribbon of your choice (twice your desired watch band length)
Matching thread
Needle
Large necklace clasp
Watch face with open rings on each side for watch band connection (you can buy watch faces at craft stores or you can take the band off an existing watch)
1. Cut the ribbon exactly in half.
2. Loop one ribbon through one end of the watch face and fold the ribbon in half so those two ends meet.
3. Sew those two ends together.
4. Using your thread, sew the joined ribbon ends onto half of the large necklace clasp. Make sure to loop the thread through the clasp several times to make the connection strong. Tie your thread knot on the underside of the ribbon and clip off any remaining thread.
5. Perform the same process on the other end of the ribbon with the other half of the necklace clasp.
6. Your ribbon watch is now complete!
These are just a few ideas to get you started in ribbon jewelry design. You may take these basics, use your creativity and come up with some wonderful designs. This is a fun project to do with family and friends and your results also make great gifts. Have fun designing your very own ribbon jewelry! |
