Paper cutting is considered the making of a design of some kind out of paper using small scissors or a knife.  These designs can be symmetrical or not, but are always decorative and sometimes even functional.  Popular scenes include nature, family scenes, animals, and holiday themes.  Today, they have many uses, including stencils, cards, scrap booking, window decorations, etching, etc.

     Paper cutting has been around for a very long time.  In its earliest form, it seems to have originated around the fourth century A. D. after the Chinese invented paper.  Naturally, paper cutting was soon to follow.  The Chinese used it for religious decorations and as patterns for embroidery.  Their designs range from very simple, flat one layer designs to extremely intricate folded, multi-layered creations.  

     Paper cutting has spread to nearly every part of the globe.  In Germany, it is called sherenschnitte, and was used as a template for furniture decorations and embroidery.  The Swiss are also know for their beautiful symmetric papercut designs.  The Dutch call it knippen, and they used it for decorating religious and legal documents.  The Polish name for it is wycinanki, and have created many designs that feature nature and symmetrical designs.  There is also evidence that the early peoples of Mexico and also the Japanese practiced the art of paper cutting.  The English form of paper cutting is the making of silhouettes.  During the Middle Ages, silhouettes were all the rage, and it was a way for families to record images until photography was invented.  This, of course, is where we get the old-fashioned Valentines adorned with silhouettes.  Today, the best-known center of design for paper cutting in the United States is Lancaster County in Pennsylvania.  Germans who wanted to escape religious persecution in their own country originally settled this area.  

     One interesting use of paper cuts in ancient times was for funeral ceremonies.  Figures or symbols were either burned or buried with the deceased.

     Another little historical tidbit is that Hans Christian Anderson, the famous Danish storyteller, was an avid paper cutter, and there are displays of his work in his home in Odensk, Denmark.   

     One does not need a lot of equipment to begin paper cutting.  Basically, you need some paper; some small, very sharp scissors or an X-Acto knife and either a design that you purchased or if you are feeling very confident, you can make a design of your own.  

     Acid-free cardstock is best to use if you are planning on using the design in a card or for scrap booking.  Most people choose to work on either white or black paper, but any color will work and is mainly personal choice. The design can be copied or drawn onto the paper.  It is also a good idea to protect your table or wherever you are cutting with a rubber mat of some kind.  There are many widely available, and the self-healing kind work great.  It might be a good idea to experiment with both scissors and an X-Acto knife to find the cutting implement you are most comfortable with.  A wide array of design books can be purchased either online or in a good bookstore.  Or you can choose to create your own. Whichever you choose, begin with a simple design and work on the small areas first and then go on to the body or outer edge of the design.  Finished designs can be mounted on a contrasting background to make your design really stand out.  With practice, you will find that you can create much more intricate designs that will amaze your family and friends.
