What¡¯s cuter on a baby than a bow, barrette, or headband made especially to match her outfit? With these simple instructions, just a few materials from your local craft/hobby store, and a little creativity, you can make hair accessories to coordinate baby¡¯s every look!

Baby Barrettes

Small plastic barrettes or metal ¡°clippies¡± work well for a baby¡¯s hair. Using low-temp hot glue or quick-drying craft glue, you can attach just about any item (like buttons, pompoms, or novelty miniatures) to a barrette. Or follow our instructions at the bottom of the page for two popular bows, which can be easily glued to barrettes or clippies, as well.

Headbands

Headbands are so quick and easy to make that you¡¯ll want one for every day of the week! Here are instructions for two styles of basic headbands, and you can use low-temp hot glue or craft glue to attach any decorative item, like sequins, marabou feathers, lace, bows, or pompoms.

Ribbon Headband

For this project, you¡¯ll need the following:

-Tape measure

-Scissors

-1/4 yard of ribbon

-Velcro

-Low-temp hot glue and glue gun

With a flexible tape measure (or a piece of yarn or ribbon), measure around your baby¡¯s head. Cut the ribbon into a strip approximately 1 inch longer than this length. Using low-temp hot glue, attach one piece of Velcro to the inside of one end of the ribbon, and attach the matching Velcro piece to the outside of the other end of the ribbon. Finally, hot glue a bow or other decoration to the ribbon to hide the overlap.

Ruffled Elastic Headbands

For this project, you¡¯ll need the following:

-Tape measure

-Scissors

-1/4 yard of 1/2 inch elastic

-1/2 yard of fabric

-Sewing supplies

-Low-temp hot glue and glue gun

Measure your baby¡¯s head, and cut a piece of elastic this length. Now, cut a strip of fabric twice the length and three times the width of the elastic. For example, if the elastic is 1/2 inch wide and 10 inches long, then the fabric strip should be 1 and 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches long. Fold the strip in half (width-ways) so that the ¡°right¡± side of the fabric, the side that will show when finished, is on the inside. Sew the edges together to create a tube for the elastic.

Next, work the elastic into the tube. Secure the elastic by sewing across the width at one end, leaving about 1/4 inch of fabric at the end. Then, scrunch up the fabric tube around the elastic so that the other end of the elastic can meet the end of the tube. Secure this end the same way as the other, also leaving 1/4 inch of fabric. Now sew a straight seam directly down the center of the tube and elastic, gathering and bunching the fabric tube as you go so that it ruffles evenly.

Finally, stitch the ends of the ruffled headband together so that the seam edges face outside. Using low-temp hot glue, attach a matching bow to the outside of the headband to hide the seam edges.

Bows

Finally, here are instructions for making two popular styles of bows, which you can then attach to barrettes, clippies, or headbands.

Standard Bow

You will need approximately 1 yard of ribbon for this bow. Pinch the ribbon, approximately 6 inches from the end, between two fingers. Make the first loop, and catch the loop between your fingers. Make a total of four loops, then tie a center knot. Trim the excess. Make another bow in a coordinating or contrasting ribbon and glue one bow on top of the other.

Pompom

You will need approximately 5 yards of ribbon for this bow. Begin by forming a loop as large as you want the finished bow to be. Then, wrap the rest of the ribbon around this loop. Flatten the ribbon loop into one bundle and snip off the corners. Next, fold each side in towards the center, and wrap a twist tie around the center. Finally, fluff out each loop to form the pompom.
