To make a pony bead cross, the basic supplies you'll need are pony beads, something to string the beads with, scissors, and if you would like to make a key chain, a key ring.
Before starting, make sure your stringing material will go four times through a pony bead. You will need to do this for one bead, and if your material is too thick, it will not go through four times. Plastic lacing would be good, as flat it will go through four times. You may wish to also experiment with thin ribbon and other types of craft cording before beginning.
For this cross, only one color is needed. After you have made one, you may wish to make others and introduce more colors. You will need a total of twenty-four pony beads to make this cross.
To make a thirty-inch necklace, you will need approximately four feet of your stringing material. If you are making a key chain, you will need about two feet.
The cross may not lie completely flat if the string twists, so throughout the process you should take care to keep the strings untwisted if possible, especially if you are using a non-round string.
1. String three pony beads onto your string or ribbon and bring the beads to the center of the string so that there is an equal amount of sting on either side.
2. Bring the ends together and string on six beads. Make sure these go over both strings. Push them down until they push up against the first three beads and pull tight.
3. Take one of the strings and string on five beads.
4. Take the string and, skipping three beads, run it through the remaining two beads. The string should be on the bottom side of the last bead strung with both strings, and should not be twisted.
5. Pull the string tight to tighten the arm of the cross. You may need to hold on to the two beads, bringing them close to the last bead already strung, and then pull on the end of string to tighten.
6. String your string through the sixth bead (strung in step 2). Pull tight. The arm should be up against the side of the bed.
7. You should now have the bottom arm of the cross, and one side arm.
8. Repeat steps 3 through 6 with the other string. This will give you your second side arm.
9. String both strings through two beads.
10. Sting one bead on one string, and two beads on the other. It does not matter which has two beads.
11. Take the string with one bead on it and string it through the second bead on the other string. This bead should now have string coming out both sides of it.
12. Tighten the cross, working from the bottom up to the top. Once satisfied, tie the two strings together at the top of the last bead.
13. Tie near the ends for a necklace. Tie to a key ring to make a key chain.
Optionally, if you have extra beads handy, you can string them on the strings to make the necklace beaded.
If you would like to add beads hanging from the bottom of the cross for either the necklace or the key chain, start with a bit more string, tie off enough for the necklace, make the cross from the bottom up (you would use three beads instead of six in step two, and five beads instead of two in step nine), tie off at the bottom, add a bead or two on each string and tie off separately.
You can vary arm length by adding or subtracting the number of beads going through both strings. You can also use just one bead on the arm ends to make a plainer looking cross. |
