Do you have a pair of cowboy boots sitting in your charity pile? Before you get rid of your boots, consider one of these fun decorative ideas.

Since many people associate cowboy boots and cacti with the West, it makes sense to put them together. For a decorative accent that will catch a lot of attention, fill each of your boots with potting soil and tuck in a cactus or two. Sit the planted boots in a sunny window and water occasionally. You can also try other drought tolerant plants in your boots for a great look.

For a touch of the old west in a child¡¯s bedroom, turn your boots into lamps for the bedside tables. You will need a drill, two light kits with rods that are the same height as the boots, and two boots. First, drill a hole in the bottom of each boot and thread the light kit¡¯s cord through the rod and into the hole in the boot¡¯s sole. The top of each boot will be the top of the lamp. Screw the bottom nut of the light kit to the rod¡¯s base through the hole in the boot. This will hold the whole light together. Add a bulb and shade to each of your lamps for a finishing touch.

For another fun decorative accent, make some book ends. You will need two boots and some small rocks. Fill each boot with rocks to give it some weight. You can glue the tops of the boots shut to keep the rocks from falling out.

Do you need a place to store outgoing mail? Drill two holes in one side of a boot. Thread wire through the holes to make a hanger. Put a hook in the wall and hang the boot on it, using your wire hanger. The next time you see the mail truck pulling up, you¡¯ll know exactly where to find that bill you need to send out.

Do you have a single boot? Use it to make a doorstop. You will need a boot, small rocks, and leather conditioner that waterproofs the leather. Simply work the conditioner into the leather and fill the boot with rocks. Then, glue the top of the boot closed so that it will stand up to the weather. Now, you have an indoor/outdoor doorstop. 

To add a western element to your garden, turn your boots into birdhouses. First, waterproof your boots. Next, cut a two inch hole low in the side of each boot. Cut a slit below the hole and insert a twig for a perch. Glue the top of each boot shut. You may want to reinforce the glued boots by punching holes around the top edge and then sewing through the holes. If your boots have a loop, use the loop as a hanger. If not, make a hanger using a wire loop and a screw eye. Hang the boots in a spot where you can watch the birds build their nests.

Finally, if you run out of ideas before you run out of boots, you can always pull on your last pair of boots for a long night of line dancing.
