Lunch-boxes are an icon of every school age child from years past all the way through modern day. The designs emblazoned across the fronts often depended upon popular television programs and cartoons; faces and characters that children could identify with. This is still a standard today. What the makers of those boxes never realized was oftentimes what someone liked as a child, would become a coveted item for that same person as they grew to an adult. From this phenomenon grew the ¡®Lunch Box Collector!¡¯

Finding these treasures was once as easy as going through your parent¡¯s basement or attic. Saved from year to year to be passed unto younger siblings, some lunch boxes were a standard in families for several years. They were never thrown away because there was always a use for a box that could be securely shut, even after they were no longer wanted for their intended purpose, or having outlived their popularity.  What child would want to carry his lunch to school in a ¡®Bozo the Clown¡¯ box, when he could be using a ¡®Bond Secret Agent¡¯ one?  It is possible to find collectible ones today, if you know where to look, and are persistent in your search. Attics and basements still offer the occasional find, as do rummage sales and thrift stores. The Internet has provided an additional market for finding the lunch box of your dreams, through online auctions and private store outlets, such as Ebay.  If you have a certain design you are looking for, constant checking of all the above may turn up not only a match, but one at an affordable price. Estate sales are a good place to uncover finds, as they often offer whole households that have not parted with anything for decades. One gentleman I know advertises in his local penny-saver newspaper that he will help clean attics and garages, and offers a discounted price if he can keep any lunch boxes uncovered during cleaning. Kovels¡¯ Antiques & Collectibles Price List, either the current years book, or their online site, can offer you guidance in availability and pricing. Knowing what you are searching for, its rarity, etc., can help greatly in not overpaying. If you are selling, this can also be a good place to search for info on pricing your sale too. 

Lunch boxes were originally conceived from tobacco boxes that were transformed for an alternative use. From these first advertising tins, an idea grew, and the first traditional metal, then barn-shaped boxes (Dome tops) were created. Plastic and vinyl followed, all covered in an astounding array of characters and designs.  In the tradition of the original tobacco boxes that were covered in advertising, some early boxes were actually premium giveaways for purchasing other products, such as peanut butter or coffee. 

Once you have acquired a collection, keeping it in top form can be a major consideration. Once tossed beneath a long ago school desk, or shoved to the back of a cubbyhole with the owner¡¯s outerwear and shoes, your prized possession now needs coddling. Metal lunch boxes are prone to rusting, latches often need attention, plastic and metal can fade, and even the newer vinyl boxes need to be handled with care so they keep their original shine. Sunlight and moisture are the two most damaging elements to your growing collection. Dirt from years past is a close runner-up.  Clean each addition as you acquire it with dish-soap and water, and dry completely. If your only space you have to display your collection is in a basement, make sure moisture is not a factor. If it is, seriously think twice about housing your collection there. Direct sunlight should be avoided also. Fading can occur relatively quickly on metal, plastic, and vinyl. Plastic and vinyl are also susceptible to cracking from direct sunlight. 

Displaying your collection can be as much fun as the actual collecting. Cubbyholes resembling the type in an old schoolhouse are an interesting display option. A shelf across the top of a room is another good way to showcase your lunch boxes. Make sure it is deep enough to hold the boxes at an angle if needed to highlight each one. Scatter a few old school books, wooden apples, pencils, etc., between the boxes if desired. Remember to dust on a regular basis if choosing this display choice though, as it does seem to draw a lot of dust, even in a relatively dust free home.
