Baseball card collecting is an easy hobby for people of all ages to enjoy. Many times, card enthusiasts begin their collection simply by pulling out cards from their childhood. Children may ask for a small packet that is displayed near the checkout aisle of their local supermarket. On many occasions, once they purchase or receive their first packet of cards, they are hooked. 

Once you decide that you want to start collecting baseball cards, you may want to narrow your collection search a little. You can collect a particular team¡¯s cards, a specific player¡¯s cards, old cards, and new cards. There are several different companies that manufacture baseball cards, so you may want to only collect one particular type of card. The choice is up to you.

Of course you can invest a little or a lot of money in your card collection. Once you become more experienced in collecting, you may find that you enjoy selling some of your cards, especially those of which you have duplicates. As you begin buying and selling, you can invest your earnings into more expensive cards to enhance your collection.

There are many places to search for baseball cards. You can visit card dealer shops, but you may expect to pay top dollar for cards purchased at one of these places. You can watch the classified section of your local newspaper, and you may even be lucky enough to find cards at a garage or yard sale. You can also attend card conventions or shows. One of the best places to find baseball cards, however, is the Internet. The Internet has a variety of online auction sites that people, just like you, use to buy and sell their card collections. It is a great way to get into the art of baseball card collecting. You can also find several message boards that help collectors with information on baseball card collecting. 

Obviously, some baseball cards are worth more than others. A card that is in mint condition and old will generally be worth much more than a new card. Likewise, an old card that is hard to find may be worth quite a bit more than an old card that is easy to find, and a star player¡¯s rookie card might be a great collector¡¯s item. 

You will need to buy a good collector¡¯s guidebook to help you determine the various prices of different cards. There are also several baseball card collecting magazines that you can subscribe to. Once you start collecting, you will probably want to keep a running list of the cards you have purchased and the card you want to purchase. If you have more than one of the same card, note that on your list. If you sell one of your duplicate cards, you can keep track of that, also. As you develop your wish list of cards, you can take extra money that you have made and earmark it specifically for one of the cards on that list. 

Cards are typically graded in the same way beginning with mint condition and progressing to poor condition. A mint (MT) card is flawless with a perfectly focused picture and sharp colors and imaging. Near-mint (NRMT) cards typically have one small flaw but till retain their sharp color. Excellent mint (EX) cards will usually have slight color and focus flaws on them. A card that is in very good (VG) condition will show some signs of wear. Cards will then decline in condition from good (G) to fair (F) to poor (P).

As you begin your collection, you might want to set a budget to keep your expenditures under control. It is also important to store your cards in a safe place. You want to protect them from extreme conditions such as abundant sunlight or high humidity. Some collectors store their cards in boxes, while others store their cards in albums. Card collecting is not only a lot of fun but an investment for the future. Be careful, though, because once you start collecting baseball cards, you may not be able to stop.
