Following a pattern to make great clothes is easy, fun, and very rewarding. Fun to do alone or with someone you love, a great project for rainy days or those evenings you have nothing else to do. It can be rewarding because not only have you saved money by sewing you own clothing but you made them yourself. One of the things that I have also found is that it is easy to make patters of your favorite clothing. Sometimes you can¡¯t always find the pattern for something, or if you do find a pattern it is way off in the size. Sometimes you find something that there just isn¡¯t a pattern our there for.  There are a few different ways to get a pattern or to make a pattern to use for your clothing.

One of the ways to make your own pattern is to use other clothing. Let¡¯s say that you have a favorite shirt or pair of pants that you would love to more pairs. All you have to do it take one pair and take it apart to get the pattern. You have to take them apart carefully; you want to be able to put them back together so you can wear them again. As you take them apart you need to number each piece. You will see that things are layered and you have to put them back in a specific order. When putting them back together you just go from the highest number to the lowest number. 

For the pattern material I like to use newspaper, but there are several other things that you can use; including wax paper and butcher block paper. I don¡¯t like to use paper that is very heavy so that it can fold and move with the material. You can try a variety of papers till you find one that you are comfortable using.

Lay each piece of the article you are taking apart on the paper, use stick pens to pin it down to the paper. If you have a steady hand you may not have to pin the items. Trace the shape onto the paper so that you can cut it out. Write on the each piece what the pattern goes with and don¡¯t forget to number the pattern so that you can put it together it the proper order.  

One of the other ways that I have found to make your own pattern is to take an old pattern and trace it onto your own paper. You may have a friend that has a great pattern for something you would like to make and they just don¡¯t want to give it up. Well you can just take the pattern and make you own copy, especially if it is a pattern that they just don¡¯t make anymore. Make sure that you write what ever is on the original pattern on the one that you are making. Also make sure that you write any special instructions so that you will not have any problems putting the pattern together.

The more experienced sewer can make a pattern without the use of something to trace. If you know the basic ideas of what is needed for an article of clothing all you will need is the measurements. 

Making your on patterns gives you a feeling of great accomplishment. You can show off your new clothing and you can even give others a gift of a pattern so that they can enjoy making their own clothing. Making patters is easier than most people think; it just takes some patience and a little know how.
