Many kinds of sports equipment cost a lot of money, so it¡¯s important to take good care of all the items that help us have fun. When we clean, store, and maintain things properly, they will work correctly when needed and may last a long time.
One of the most important tasks is to keep the storage equipment clean and usable. For example, if you play golf or tennis, make sure you have a bag that will hold some basic cleaning supplies for your next outing. For example, a towel may come in handy for wiping off clubs or your racquet. Cleaning your ball or shoes, along with other accessories, may become necessary as well. Wet Ones or another moistened disposable wipe are great for quick clean-ups during or after a physical workout. Make sure you have a storage compartment for the dirty towel or used wipes.
To clean rain gear used for hiking, jogging, or other outdoor sports, check the manufacturer¡¯s label and follow the directions. You should always us product covers on your equipment for covering racquets, balls, or other items so they don¡¯t get dirty, scratched, or damaged. Sometimes there are special facilities available. To clean golf balls, for example, just use the ball washer at the golf course. Some golfers will soak their golf balls in bleach to try to make them look new. Using an all-purpose cleaner and a clean cloth can clean most golf bags, or you can use a cleaner like the 409-spray bottle and a clean rag. Then just dry it off with a dry towel and you¡¯re ready to go.
The same goes for mitts, which must be cleaned and oiled, as well as bats for softball or baseball. You may need to purchase special creams or oils to protect the natural materials from which the equipment is made. To clean golf irons, you will need steel wool to remove any rust. Then you will need a stiff toothbrush to clean the grooves. Some golf courses sell special cleaning products that will remove grass stains and ball marks from the clubs. Or just use a strong cleaner from home. You can clean leather grips and mitts with saddle soap. If the grips start getting slippery, use a little fine sandpaper to roughen them. Then wipe the dust off. Do the same with your driver and the other wood clubs.
There are different ways to clean athletic shoes. It all depends on what they are made of. First, get a brush to remove all the grass and dirt. Some shoes can take a wet cloth for wiping them clean. Then get a stain remover for grass stains or scuffs. Take a shoe brush to footwear that has caked-on mud or debris. Arrange for annual waterproofing.
Keep your equipment clean after each use, and store it securely in a clean, dry area. Follow manufacturers¡¯ recommendations for routine care and maintenance. In general, treat your equipment as you would regular clothing or furniture by learning how to treat it properly and make it last as long as possible.
