Golf is one of the most popular sports in the world today. Men, women, and even teens enjoy heading to the course for a game of nine or eighteen holes. Some enthusiasts even shoot a bucket of balls for practice on occasion. For the little tykes, there is always miniature golf, which requires no special equipment. 

Serious golfers, however, typically take along a bag of clubs, tees, and balls, as well as assorted extras like clothing that includes a cap, shoes, and possibly gloves. After a few rounds, however, a golfer can bring home several items in need of cleaning and care. Here are some tips that can help golfers keep their things in good condition.

1. Remove golf shoes promptly at home. Use a stiff brush to remove dried mud or dirt from the spikes on the soles. Then use a slightly damp cloth to wipe away grass stains or other splashes of grime. Depending on the material that composes the shoe, you may need to use mildly soapy water to rub away scuffs or smudges. Quickly dry the shoes or let them air dry to prevent water damage. Then you may want to polish them or apply a protective seasonal coating or weather protection substance. Follow directions on the container to avoid using too much product.

2. For clubs with openings on the head, use a tee to push through a clean damp cloth in and out of each hole. This will help to remove trapped dirt and mud or grass. Use the brush to get rid of caked-on substances. Then wipe the head with a mild detergent solution and allow it to air dry. Use the same technique with the shaft of the club. The grip, or handle, can be made of vinyl, rubber, or leather, as well as other substances. You can use a liquid oil soap mixed with water to clean the drip, or any other cleaner that is appropriate for the material that encases the handle. Remember to wipe dry or air dry the entire club to prevent moisture damage. 

3. If you own a golf cart, wipe it down with a clean, soft cloth and mild detergent water. Rinse thoroughly to get rid of residue. Allow the cart to air dry or wipe it completely dry with a towel. Be careful not to get water in the engine or the exhaust. 

4. Your golf bag may be made of vinyl, leather, or another material. Check the label for cleaning directions. If you don't find any, use a gentle soapy solution for wiping away all the stains and smudges. Use only a very lightly damp cloth for the inside of the bag, where light and air cannot easily penetrate. Be sure that the moisture evaporates or is wiped completely away so that mildew, mold, or rust (on metal zippers, for example), do not pose problems. Clean out trash or debris from side pockets or enclosed areas. 

5. Soak your golf balls in a bucket of soapy water. Don't keep them in the liquid very long, however, just long enough to remove surface dirt. Then wipe each one dry before putting it back in your golf bag or carrying pouch. You can do the same with your tees unless you prefer to wipe them individually by hand. 

Clothing items like a hat, shirt, or gloves usually can be thrown into the washer. Check laundering instructions to be sure these go through the appropriate cycle. The next time you are ready to go golfing, your equipment and clothes will be, too!
