This project is great to do as a family during the Christmas season. The result of this project is a decorative, personal tree skirt that can be used for generations.
In order to do this project, you will need one standard tree skirt, glue, felt, scissors, paint, permanent markers, glitter, and a willing family!
First, find a suitable work space. Tree skirts tend to be large, so make sure that the work area is large enough to fit the tree skirts and to provide enough room for your family to put their creative skills to the test!
With your family, determine the shapes that you would like to cut out of the tree skirt. Some suggestions include candy canes, stars, pine trees, and snowflakes. Using a permanent marker, draw these shapes onto the tree skirt. If you are worried about your own artistic abilities, draw the picture on a piece of white paper first. Then cut out the picture and trace it onto the tree skirt.
Next, cut out the shapes from the tree skirt. You may want to have an adult do this because it can be very difficult for children to cut through the fabric of a tree skirt. Make sure you cut outside of the permanent marker lines so that the marker lines are no longer visible.
Next, flip the tree skirt over so that you can see the backside of it. Choose colors of felt that would be appropriate for your cutouts. For example, stars can be yellow, snowflakes can be white, candy canes can be red and white, and pine trees can be green. Using craft glue, glue the felt to the back of the skirt underneath the cutouts. You should put the glue around the cutouts and then press the felt against it. Cut off any excess material and then let the glue dry completely.
When the glue has dried, flip the tree skirt over again so that you can see the front of the skirt. Use craft glue to trace around the cutout shapes and then sprinkle glitter over this glue and let it dry. When the glue and glitter has dried, take the tree skirt outside and shake it out to get rid of any extra glitter. Next, you can use paint to add family names to the tree skirt. For example, if each member of the family did one cutout, put that family member¡¯s name underneath or near that cutout. You can also paint additional pictures onto the tree skirt. You can add a special touch to the tree skirt by adding a rim of white to the tree skirt to resemble snow.
If you would like to further embellish your tree skirt, try sewing beads and sequins to the trim of the tree skirt for an extra sparkle.
When you are sure that all paint and glue has completely dried, you can put the tree skirt around the base of your tree! Stand back and admire your family work of art! |
