Christmas is for children and nothing captures the spirit of Christmas more than a sweet teddy bear. Bears are a popular design, so they are available in fabric, wood, glass, metal and sculptured dough ornaments. Or, make your own out of heavy paper; the combinations and possibilities are endless. 

Use one of these teddy bear themes for this year¡¯s Christmas tree.

Angel Bears

Purchase small plush bears; they are readily available at craft and fabric stores. Use white felt to cut wings and halos and use white craft glue or a hot glue gun to attach them to the bears. For extra sparkle, use glitter glue to edge the wings with silver or gold.  Lace a tinsel garland or wide, gold-embroidered, wired ribbon through the branches, weaving it back and forth. White lights will complete this truly angelic theme. Place a large angel bear at the very top of the tree. 

Santa Bears

Start with pre-purchased plush bears, small enough to fit into ornament sized Christmas stockings. Place half of the bears in the stockings and hang them from a tree wrapped with red or multi-colored Christmas lights. Glue pre-purchased Santa hats to the remaining bears or make hats with red and white felt or heavy paper. To make tiny Santa hats, cut a red circle with a four-inch diameter. Cut the circle into quarters and wrap the hat so the two flat sides overlap; attach them with glue. Place a strip of white material around the curved base of the hat; put a tiny piece of white material or cotton at the top of the hat for a pom-pom. 

Teddy Bears¡¯ Picnic

For an eclectic teddy tree, combine a varied collection of bears and create a teddy bears¡¯ Christmas picnic. Combine any type of bear themed ornaments with tiny wicker baskets and miniature food. To keep the tree visually cohesive, limit the types of food. For example, frosted grapes and apples fit the theme and are beautiful and festive on any tree. 

Baby Bears

If there is a little one in the house, decorate a pastel tree with baby bears. Select or make white or pastel bears; tie slightly darker pastel ribbons around each of their necks. Intersperse the bears on the trees with plastic baby bottles, rattles and ribbon bows. Check a party store in the baby shower aisle for great inexpensive baby themed items; they are often used as decorations or favors. 

Craft Bears

There are an infinite number of homemade bears that can be created for a Christmas tree. Purchase unpainted wooden bear ornaments and paint them with your choice of colors and designs. Or, use a template to cut felt into bears, making a front and a back. Place a small amount of fiberfill between the two layers and sew or glue them together; use fabric paint and glue with bits of fabric, buttons, sequins and other decorations to create faces and clothing on the bears. Make homemade craft dough to sculpt bear ornaments, adding a hole to each for an ornament hook; bake them, then paint and lacquer each ornament before hanging it.
