Decorating a Christmas tree is a very personal experience; the result is an expression of who we are, and makes a unique statement to the beholder.  You can go into any number of homes around the world and not find any two trees exactly alike.  Sometimes, however, we change through the years and decide to try something a bit different when it comes to our decorating ideas.  If you haven＊t yet come to a decision regarding this year＊s Christmas tree theme, consider the look of glitter and tinsel.  Depending upon your approach, it can be chic, old world, ultramodern or just plain dazzling.  Here are some suggestions for decorations that will make a striking presentation this holiday season.

First on the agenda, of course, is the stringing of the lights.  Miniature lights tend to have the best effect and 每 for this particular theme 每 clear bulbs work best.  Certainly, you can opt for tinted bulbs if you prefer color, but the clear lighting provides more pure light for a truly breathtaking effect when designing a glitter and tinsel tree.  One very important point to keep in mind is how to add lighting in a way that will provide the best effect.  By using an abundance of miniature bulbs, wound throughout the tree in a random pattern, the effect of starlight will be produced.  Try to avoid straight lines or other geometric designs 每 especially with this particular theme.  Another consideration is the color of the electrical cording.  For those who opt for a white tree, be sure that the cord that attaches the lights is also white.  If dark ones are used, it will significantly compromise the appearance of your finished product.  It goes without saying that cool burning lights should be used, in order to eliminate fire hazard.

While there are numerous styles of garland that can be used, the snowflake variety works best with this type of theme.  Snowflake garland can be purchased in plastic or glass and, often, includes a glittery finish.  This is ideal for picking up the light and adding to the overall presentation.  Another option that will work just as well is glittery snowball garland.  There＊s no need for concern if you＊re decorating a white tree.  Even though these two types of garland don＊t add color, they do add sparkle, which is the goal.  Color can be addressed when it＊s time to add ornaments.

Although many people prefer to make the addition of tinsel 每 also known as ※icicles§, to those of us who are older - the last step in the decorating process, it＊s easier to put these in place just after the lights and garland have been put in position.  This offers the benefit of greater ease in dismantling the tree at the completion of the holiday season.  Ornaments won＊t need to be cleaned off before repackaging, since the tinsel will be in the background, while these will be in the foreground.  Once again, silver tinsel will produce the best overall effect, leaving the tinting to be brought into the design when the baubles are hung on the tree.  Be sure to add a generous amount - the more, the better 每 so that there＊s an evenly distributed blanket of shimmer when the light hits them.  It doesn＊t really matter whether you＊re the type to throw handfuls of it or carefully place each strand atop the branches; either will have the desired effect, as long as you＊re not stingy with them.  For those who are looking for something a bit different this year, ※rain tinsel§ adds a touch of flair and breaks away from the more traditional decorating style.  As opposed to common tinsel, the rain variety presents itself in the form of a tall silver stem (not unlike that of a flower), with several smaller stems branching off from it.  At the tip of each of these is a cascade of tinsel that streams down in the manner of a waterfall.  This unique style makes a stunning addition to a glitter and tinsel Christmas tree.

The tree is now ready for the placement of ornaments.  While there are myriads of such adornments for sale during the holiday season, keep in mind that you＊re aiming for sparkle.  Any variety of colorful, glistening ornaments will do for dressing the tree, but a more frugal budget may inhibit the number to be purchased.  In this case, you may wish to create handcrafted decorations.  Here are a few suggestions which allow room for creativity, while keeping within the allotted budget.

SPARKLE CONES

Materials:

Pinecones

Clear-Drying Glue

Glitter (silver, white or tinted with color)

Silver Thread

Small Paintbrush

Disposable Plastic Bowl

Prepare your work area by spreading newspapers across the table and pouring a moderate amount of glue into a disposable plastic bowl.  While the materials list indicates clear-drying glue, white glue can also be used, if the illusion of snow is desired.

Using a small paintbrush, carefully apply a thin coating of glue to each of the ※petals§ of the pinecone.  Immediately sprinkle with glitter and allow to dry thoroughly.  Tie a silver thread to the top of the cone (or poke a hole at the top and weave the thread through it) and, forming a loop, tie it off so that the ornament can be hung on the tree.  Repeat the process for each pinecone.

If you prefer, you can substitute clear nail polish for the glue.  This is less desirable, however, due to the fumes that are emitted by the polish.

3D GLITTERS

Materials:

Transparent Plastic Ornaments (pull-apart variety)

Rhinestones or Colored Gems (Glass or Plastic)

Silver Thread or Hook Hangers

Purchase a number of transparent pull-apart ornaments and rhinestones or colored gems at your local crafts store.  A variety of shapes can be used - or a number of ornaments of the same design, if you＊re looking for a more uniform display.  A combination of rhinestones and colored gems adds a bit of spice to the tree, but you may choose to use rhinestones, exclusively, if you want pure sparkle and glitter that isn＊t broken up by the presence of color.

Separate the two parts of each ornament and fill each side with rhinestones or gems to the rim.  Holding the two halves close together, quickly flip them toward each other, snapping the two halves together.  Tie silver thread to the top or add a hook hanger.  Repeat the process for each ornament.

GLISTENING TASTIES

Materials:

Sugar or Shortbread Cookie Dough (homemade or pre-made)

Rolling Pin

Cookie Cutters (variety of shapes)

Tinted Decorator Sugar

Decorator Frosting

Edible Decorator Candies

White Thread

Prepare your favorite sugar or shortbread cookie dough (or use pre-mixed dough from a tube) and roll it out flat on the tabletop.  Use a variety of cookie cutters to cut shapes out of the dough 每 making sure to use the type of cutters that will include a small loop at the top for inserting a tree hanger - and place on the baking pan(s).  Bake as directed, but do not place any decorations on the dough before baking.  When finished, remove from the oven and allow to cool.

After the cookies are completely cooled, use decorator frosting to cover a large portion of each cookie 每 depending upon desired effect 每 sprinkling some areas generously with decorator sugar and placing edible candies in other areas.  Turn the cookies over and gently shake off the excess sugar.  When the decorator frosting has dried and the sugar and candies are firmly in place, weave white thread through the loop at the top of each and tie firmly in place, to form a hanger so that they can be placed on the tree.

A number of other items may be used to create handcrafted ornaments.  All it takes is a bit of imagination and the time to construct them.  The finished product will provide a stunning Christmas tree that will be breathtaking during the day, and absolutely magnificent during the evening hours, when the brilliance of lights and glitter come together to form a splendid presentation.
