Christmas brings about a variety of decorations and crafts. If you are looking for a simple craft that requires very little materials then try making paper lanterns. These lanterns are fun for all ages and can be done in a variety of colors or sizes. Hang them on trees, from the ceiling, stairway banisters or in doorways.
There are two basic lantern types: globes or cylinders.
Cylinder Lantern:
To make a cylinder paper lantern you will need:
1. Construction paper or wallpaper scraps
2. Scissors
3. Clear tape or stapler
4. Ruler (optional)
5. Items that can be used for decorating (such as glue, glitter, stickers, pictures, rhinestones or sequins, markers or crayons).
You will need your paper to be in the shape of a rectangle. Most construction paper comes in the standard size of 8 x 11 1/2. It is recommended to stick with this size until you achieve the basic idea of making paper lanterns. Once you have mastered paper lanterns you can experiment with different sizes. If you are using scraps of wallpaper, you can use a sheet of notebook or printer paper as a guide to cut your wallpaper to the proper size.
To make the handle:
1. Take the paper and cut off a strip about 1/2 inch wide from the short edge of the paper. You can use a ruler to measure the 1/2 inch or just "eyeball" it.
2. Set this strip aside for later use.
To make the body of the lantern:
1. Fold the paper in half lengthways with the patterned side on the outside.
2. Make vertical cuts starting from the folded edge and cutting towards the non-folded edge.
3. Each cut should be about 1/2 inch apart.
4. Stop cutting 1/2 inch from the non-folded edge. This is very important, if you cut all the way through you will only end up with a pile of strips.
5. The paper should end up with a fringe or comb effect.
6. Unfold the paper.
7. Bring the corners of the paper together width-ways to form a cylinder crease-side out.
8. The desired effect is for the lantern to bow outwards in the middle at the crease.
9. Tape, glue or staple the edges together.
10. Attach the handle to the top and hang your lantern.
Note: If you want a decorated lantern you will need to decorate before cutting. Keep in mind that you will be cutting into the paper every 1/2 inch so pictures, stickers or designs will be cut as well.
There are many different things you can do to spice up your lanterns. Look for pictures in magazines and glue them to the paper, then follow directions above. Or, after a lantern has been completed you can make strips of different colored paper and weave them among the strips in the lantern. Instead of paper handles try using ribbon, tinsel or string. If you become really adept at making cylinder paper lanterns try making tiny ones that can be strung together like garland and placed around the tree.
Globe Lantern: (often called a St. Martin¡¯s lantern)
To make a Globe lantern you will need:
1. Three sheets of lightweight letter size paper (the lighter the better).
2. Glue or tape
3. Crayons, markers or paint.
4. Needle and thread
5. Two craft sticks.
To make the globe lantern:
1. Glue or tape the three sheets of paper together end to end lengthwise to make one long sheet.
2. Fold the paper in half lengthwise and color or draw on the outside of the paper on both sides. You can put a picture, a pattern or a solid color. The top of your picture should be along the fold. Start off with a simple pattern or solid color the first time until you understand exactly how it will look.
3. Keep the paper folded lengthways.
4. Start at one end and fold it the same as for a paper fan (called concertina fashion).
5. Fold 1/2 an inch one way and the next fold 1/2 an inch the other way.
6. Press well on every fold to make sure it is well creased.
7. Separate the two sides of the paper.
8. Unfold the entire sheet of paper just a little and then refold each side separately.
9. You should end up with one fold at the top and two edges, making a v-shape.
10. Press on all the folds again.
To secure the Globe:
1. Take a needle and long piece of thread.
2. Pass the needle through each fold of one edge leaving 1 inch of thread hanging loosely.
3. Pass the needle back through the folds a 2nd time.
4. Tie off the thread, with about 1 inch slack at either end of the folds.
5. Repeat on the second edge.
6. Pull out the folded edges of the paper; it should unfold in a circle.
7. If your lantern seems to have a big hole in the center, you can fix it by tightening the slack in the threads.
To hang the lantern you need a hook at the top. This is where your craft sticks come in.
1. Punch a hole through both sticks.
2. Place a craft stick on either end of the globe.
3. Tie thread or string through the holes of the stick and through the globe.
4. Use a paper clip to make a hook and tie it to the string at the top of your globe.
St Martin's Lanterns are traditionally hung on a pole, since they are mainly used in parades, but you can hang your lantern anywhere.
It is important to never use an open flame in a paper lantern. A small flashlight or Christmas lights will work, but you may want to turn the lights off at night or when not at home just as a precautionary measure. |
