The Christmas season is a great time to make holiday crafts with the family.  You might be surprised how easy it is to make beautiful holiday decorations and ornaments with your children.  One example of such a decoration (or ornament!) is a miniature Christmas tree.  In order to make this craft, you will need the following supplies:

Materials:

-Cone paper cups

-Paint and paintbrushes

-Beads

-String

-Needle

-Scissors

Step One: Take a cone paper cup (the type that is used in water coolers, which you can find in most office supply stores) and a pair of scissors.  Fold the cone in different areas, from the point down to a part of the circular bottom.  Make a few snips on each fold, so that when the cone is restored to its original shape, the cuts look like triangles.  These will become the branches of your tree.  When you have made at least ten cuts on the paper cup, gently fold the tip of each new triangle so that it curves toward the sky.

Step Two: Using paintbrushes, apply green paint all over your miniature tree, including the undersides of each new cut.  Let the paint dry completely before moving on to the next step.  You can use several different shades of green and can even add some brown in order to achieve a more natural look.

Step Three: Thread a needle and sew a bead onto each one of the protruding triangles.  This gives the appearance of Christmas ornaments on the tree.  Smalls white and colored pearls look very much like glass bulb ornaments.  Tie a knot in the thread on the inside of each protruding triangle to secure each bead to the triangle.  When you are finished decorating your tree, use it to decorate around the house!  Also, try some of the following tips to make a more authentic looking Christmas tree.

Tips:

-For a snowy look, apply white paint to the point of the tree and to the tips of the cut triangles.  You can make the snow sparkly by sprinkling some glitter over the white paint before it dries.

-Use a piece of sparkly string as garland.  Just glue the garland to the outside of the tree.  Make sure to use glue sparingly so that it does not drip down the sides of the tree.

-Test your artistic skills by painting miniature candy canes or holiday lights onto your miniature Christmas tree.  Remember that smaller paintbrushes work best for detailed art work.

-Use a star shaped bead as the star on top of the Christmas tree.  You could also paint an angel on a bit of construction paper if you truly wanted to challenge yourself!

-You can turn your miniature Christmas tree into an ornament by attaching a bit of ribbon to the tree and stringing it on a branch of your own Christmas tree!

-Try to make a trunk for your tree by slicing a toilet paper roll down the side and rolling it tighter to make it thinner.  You can paint the smaller roll and glue it inside of your miniature Christmas tree.
