Every year, you drag down your Christmas box from your attic that is loaded with all kinds of different decorative Christmas items, ornaments and crafts. Or maybe you are just starting out and slowly collecting your Christmas inspired items to display around your home. In addition to lights around the exterior of the house, many people place a Christmas wreath on the outside of their front doors to make the home appear more festive and welcoming. However, if you have gone to any crafts or home decor store, wreaths can be extremely expensive. Why not make your own personal wreath at home for a fraction of the cost?
At crafts stores, you can find plain pine wreaths for a small cost. Your base, however, does not need to be limited to faux pine wreaths. You can also use styrofoam rings, packed hay wreaths, twig wreaths or recycled items, like recycled circular fruit or deli trays. To make it decorative, all you need is a glue gun, some inspiration and creativity. Think of a theme for your wreath and then buy different craft items that go with that theme. Before actually gluing items onto the wreath, be sure to design the best layout for your wreath by roughly laying out where your items will be laying.
Flower Wreath
If you will be using the wreath for a party, purchase some fresh winter flowers from your local florist with colors that blend well together. Cut the stems short and using floral wire, place the flowers onto the wreath. Be sure to add some inexpensive baby¡¯s breath to give the wreath some fullness. If you want to hang the wreath on your front door for the Christmas season, go to a crafts store and purchase some dried flowers. Add some raffia bows and sprigs of cinnamon to give your wreath a holiday smell and rustic look.
Ornament Wreath
At a crafts store or any department store, purchase a box or two of the golf-ball sized silver or gold ball ornaments. You can do this ornament wreath in one of two ways. For the first way, you may want to use a hay or styrofoam wreath base. Hot glue the gold or silver balls one by one onto the base so that you cannot see the base underneath. The wreath will be made entirely of the shiny balls and look spectacular in Christmas lights. You can add a red velvet bow on top for a splash of color. For the second version of an ornament wreath, use a faux pine wreath base. Use silver or gold ribbon (about half an inch thick) and wrap it around the circular wreath, about two inches apart. Get three of the golf-ball sized shiny ornaments and hot glue them together so they are in the shape of a flat diamond. Once they are glued together, place the clusters around the wreath about three inches apart.
Cranberry Wreath
For the cranberry wreath, you will need a hay wreath base and sprigs of faux cranberries that can be found at many craft stores. Cut the cranberries from the sprigs and hot glue them one by one onto the wreath base, so you cannot see the hay base below. Only do this for about three-fourths of the wreath. Once the cranberries are dried onto the wreath, in the empty space, hot glue a large green velvet ribbon, greenery, holly sprigs or faux apples. |
