The southwestern style has become a very popular theme for home decor. If you are one of the many people who love the southwestern theme, instead of a traditional holiday Christmas tree, why not decorate a cactus to create a one-of-a-kind southwestern holiday decoration? This fun and festive south-of-the-border version will evoke visions of Christmas cowboys and fabulous Mexican holiday fiestas. 

Consider decorating an artificial cactus to avoid unwanted painful surprises from thorns and stickers. Artificial cactuses look just as nice and aren't nearly as perilous to decorate. Artificial cactuses come in all sizes, varieties, and prices. Many artificial cactuses look as genuine as the real thing. Choose a cactus with several branches for hanging southwestern ornaments and other decorations. A cactus in a container with a wide base is recommended so the display remains stable after ornaments and lights have been added. 

If the cactus you choose doesn¡¯t have a wide enough base, create another base by painting and decorating a larger terra cotta pot. Plug the center hole, and put a few inches of aquarium gravel in the bottom. Set the cactus in its original container inside the terra cotta pot. Fill in the sides with additional aquarium gravel. You should now have a stable base that will enable you to hang a variety of ornaments and lights on your holiday cactus.

You can decorate your Christmas cactus with regular holiday lights, or you can use southwestern style lights. There are various sizes of lights available that have light covers resembling real chili peppers. These plastic light covers come in all sizes, and they are sold either with a string of lights or separately. For a smaller Christmas cactus you will need to use smaller light covers. These unique lights are relatively inexpensive, but they are very impressive.

Holiday Christmas tree decorations of all kinds and sizes can be found at most large craft stores and discount stores. They are available in all price ranges as well. Chose enough ornaments to adequately decorate your cactus, but do not use too many. When it comes to decorating a tree or a cactus, remember that less is more. If you overload your cactus with too many ornaments it becomes too busy looking. It will seem more like a southwestern explosion rather than an eye-catching Christmas display. 

Consider using a southwestern style tree skirt fashioned from colorful bandanas tied together at the corners. This simple and innovative tree skirt is the perfect addition to your southwestern holiday cactus. 

For added interest, consider surrounding your Christmas cactus with an old-fashioned electric locomotive. This is the perfect addition to a southwestern Christmas display. Enhance the display with miniature cowboys, Indians, and other southwestern paraphernalia. 

Begin decorating your holiday cactus with lights of your choice. Don¡¯t overdo the lights. Too many lights will overpower the display. Attach them to the interior branches, as well as those on the outside edges of the cactus. Weave them in and out beginning at the top. Lights that go around and around, rather than up and down, generally look nicer. 

Add hanging decorations by securing them a couple of inches from one another. Trees and cactuses look nicer when ornaments are allowed to hang freely rather than perched precariously on top of underlying branches.  If your ornaments don¡¯t come with large enough looped hangers, attach small metal ones. Be sure to place ornaments that are alike on opposite sides of the cactus.
