There are many types of putters available to the golfer. These range from the standard to the exotic, from the inexpensive to ridiculously spendy, from legal to illegal. According to some sales numbers there are more putters made and sold than any other club type made.

     If the driver is considered the beast of the game, the sledgehammer of long distance might, the putter is considered the beauty, the gentle butterfly of finesse. 

     There are conventional putters of standard length. And there are long putters. There are some with offset shafts. Most are from 33 inches in length to 36 inches. This all depends upon a persons height or the type of style he uses to putt. For example some golfers really crouch down or contort their bodies in unbelievable ways in order to hit the sweet shot that will sink the ball in the hole. 

     Some parts of putters have taken on a state of anthropomorphism. For example there are different heads one can choose from. Some are called heel-toe or heel weight. These heads have different faces. Some of the faces are made of graphite, aluminum, tungsten, urethane, brass, balata, just about anything you can imagine including old fashioned wood. Some of the more cutting edge putters have inserts of many varieties.

     To be called legal putters they must conform to regulations made by the United States Golf Association. The USGA is the official body of golf sanctions and the rules and regulations for golf in the U.S. 

     Some of these rules differentiate the putter from other clubs even more. Of all the clubs a golfer may use during a game only the putter can be adjusted for length. It can also be adjusted for lie even though a putter must not have a loft greater than ten degrees. Also this club must be used on the putting or chipping green only. 

     There are many styles of putters. They are made of all kinds of materials.Some are legal forplay some are not allowed. They range in cost from fifteen dollars all the way to hundreds even thousands of dollars. Yet some claim there is enough in a cheap used putter to put a lot of play in this game.

     Since the object of golf is to get the ball in the hole and this usually happens with a putt many players realize the importance of a good putter. If not a good putter then a good familiarity of the putt and a good technique by the golfer will sink the putt.

     Sometimes a golfer realizes the importance of a good putter in his hands. Like when the chips are down and it is the eighteenth hole or sudden death. Sure there is the rare hole-in-one. Or there is the mighty drive to the green. There is the breathtaking shot out of a bunker. But the putt that falls in the hole to win the match when it is so quiet and the tension can be cut with a knife has more of a crescendo denoument than any other play in the match.

  The player with the best putter or best use of a putter will win. Some

players know that they either live or die by the putter.
