Divination is a very personal method of gaining insight into our lives. Humans have a curiosity about what the future holds for them and others. Divination methods have been around for hundreds and thousands of years. Early systems were probably variations of natural omens such as the wind blowing through sacred trees or the movement of birds and other animals. Once a technique had been established, the information was preserved in oral and later written traditions. With these records being passed down, some systems we use today are almost unchanged from the original predictions.

When trying a new system, give it about three-six months at a minimum. Some systems have steeper learning curves than others do. Do trial reading with family and friends to get practice and to see how comfortable it is for you. If you are reading for yourself, be aware that your own unconscious wishes may influence the reading. Do trial readings for yourself and keep a diary to see if you are influencing yourself. Once you are feeling confident, other people may ask you for a reading. If you are not in the mood or something does not feel right, arrange another time with them. Some people like to ask for readings just to try and debunk the reader.

Many types of systems exist because everyone has one or two senses that they relate through best. So choosing a divination system that is appealing to your main or favorite sense will help in obtaining insights. Alternatively, a person may use their ancestry or family tradition to find a divination system to use. 

People who are attracted to visuals should examine the Tarot cards. There is a large variety in themes and card sizes. There may be some elements that you are not comfortable with such as nudity. Many stores that carry tarot decks have several ones opened that you can look through to see if they appeal to you. Plenty of Internet sites have reviews for most decks out there. There is even a form of cartomancy that uses a deck of regular playing cards. If colors in a general way attract you, try chromatomancy or candles (lychnomancy).

Tactile persons may find a connection in using Runes or other stones, shells or even dice. Rune sets are made of a myriad of materials from gemstones, glass, clay and metals. Find a material that feels good in your hands. Some symbols may be painted on the items instead of carved, so give them a good feel to see which way you prefer.

There are systems that use birds (ornithomancy), animals and plants (botanomancy). Most of these systems relate answers to the number, sounds, actions or appearances of the chosen representative.
