The first thing to decide is what you are looking to get from your next board. The most important factor in determining that is your skill level. If you are a beginner, remember that your first board is just a tool to help you learn the mechanics of surfing, nothing more. You can look cool on your first "real" board once you know what you're doing, but this first one should be cheap and easy to maneuver because it will take a beating as you learn.
The main factors determining how a surfboard rides are its length, width, and thickness. Beginners should choose a bigger board than experienced surfers. Longer boards are easier to paddle and more stable than short boards. A good rule of thumb is that the board should be is 18-24 inches taller than its rider. The board's width will affect its stability, with a wide board being more stable than a thin board. A beginner should choose a board with a minimum 19 inch width. The thickness of the board affects its floatation, so beginners should choose a minimum 2.5 inch thick board. Heavier riders may need a slightly thicker board, so make sure to take weight into consideration when selecting.
There are also different types of surfboards to consider. If you are an intermediate or advanced surfer, there are more types of boards available to you. Also, if you surf 3 or 4 times a week, you can basically start on any board you wish because you will improve too quick for a beginner board. The best boards for beginners are Popouts and softboards, or Malibus.
A Pop-Out is made by a production line and is almost indestructible, making it a good board for beginners. Unlike the typical custom made fiberglass board, Pop-Outs are made of foam and then covered with a thick layer of fiberglass. This makes the board heavier and more stable. The best board for beginners is the softboard, or Malibu. They are big, thick, and stable, because they are made of foam instead of fiberglass. They are usually at least nine feet long.
The shortboard, or Thruster, is the most popular kind of board. It is best for quick moves and usually ranges in size from around 5 feet 8 inches to almost 7 feet. The longboard, or Malibu, is longer than the standard shortboard, but it is also designed differently. Longboards have only one fin, while shortboards generally have three, and the nose of the longboard is rounded. Mini Malibus are usually seven to nine feet long and Malibus are longer than nine feet. The Fish is similar in design to the shortboard, but is shorter, wider, and more rounded. Fish are usually between five and six feet long. The Gun is used for big waves and is basically a larger version of the shortboard. It is usually between seven and twelve feet long.
Whether you buy a new or used board depends on several factors, not just one's available budget. Of course, that is a major consideration, but ability of the surfer again becomes an important factor. If you are a beginner, not only will your board suffer some damage while you are learning, but you will soon need a better board as you progress. It is probably best for beginners to find a cheap and durable board that is easy to learn on, then spend more money on the next board. If you are a more experience surfer, it all comes down to what you are willing and able to spend on your surfboard. |
