Your choice of baseball glove will affect your performance, success, and fun with the game. This article suggests which factors are the most important when you are choosing a new baseball glove.
YOUR POSITION
One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a baseball glove is the position you will be playing. The gloves made for specific positions have certain features to help the player perform well. If you will be playing multiple positions, you should either choose a baseball glove for the position you will be playing most often or choose a utility glove.
A catcher¡¯s mitt is more of a fingerless mitten than a glove. It is reinforced to withstand heavy use and heavily padded to help reduce the sting from the pitcher throwing high-velocity balls. Although there is no standard baseball glove for pitchers, they generally choose closed webbing to help hide the ball from the hitter.
Baseball gloves made for first basemen are slightly padded since these players spend much of the game catching balls thrown very hard. These gloves are also longer in order to help the player field throws more easily.
Middle infielders use smaller, five-fingered baseball gloves with shallow pockets so the fielder can easily scoop up grounders and quickly pull the ball out of the glove and throw it. Outfielders generally prefer baseball gloves which are larger and longer than infielder gloves to enable them to catch high-flying balls more easily.
YOUR BUDGET
Baseball gloves come in a range of prices from $15 for base models to over $200 for high-end gloves from manufacturers such as Nike, Nokono, Wilson, or Rawlings. Quality baseball gloves generally cost a bit more, but will likely last longer. If you expect to get heavy use out of your baseball glove, it may be less expensive in the long run to invest in a durable, good quality glove which will last for many years.
A good baseball glove does not have to be expensive, however. Gloves which cost less than $50 can give you many years of good service if you perform routine maintenance. A younger player who might quickly outgrow his or her baseball glove may not want to spend the money on a high-end model.
You might also consider choosing a good used baseball glove, which can often be found at thrift stores, garage sales, websites, or sporting good stores which carry used equipment. A used, high-end baseball glove will usually cost considerably less, be made of solid leather, and already be broken in.
THE FEEL
Another factor in choosing a baseball glove is how the glove feels. If a glove feels uncomfortable in the store, it will probably feel uncomfortable even after you break it in.
When you try on the baseball glove, it should feel fairly snug when adjusted to your hand. Find a glove which opens and closes quickly and easily, and is light enough for you to control without difficulty.
SIZE
Baseball gloves come in a range of sizes. A glove is measured from the heel of the glove to the tip of the longest finger or webbing. For players aged fourteen to adult, outfielders will need 12 to 13 inch gloves with deeper pockets and infielders should look for 10 3/4 to 12 inch gloves with shallower pockets.
Baseball gloves also come in sizes made specifically for kids. Youth baseball gloves should be chosen very carefully. Do not buy a child a big glove he or she can ¡°grow into.¡± Big gloves do not give them the control they need to succeed in the game.
Kids under the age of eight should have a glove from 9 inches for infield to 11 inches for outfield. Kids from eight to thirteen should consider gloves no bigger than 12 inches for outfield and 10 inches for infield.
MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION
The material of a baseball glove is also a major deciding factor. There are three types of glove materials.
Leather baseball gloves are the most popular since they offer the best control, feel, and comfort. The leather should be sturdy and fairly stiff. A good rule of thumb is the higher the quality of leather, the more durable the glove. Beware of gloves marked ¡°genuine leather palm.¡± This means only the palm itself is leather and the rest of the glove is synthetic.
A baseball glove made of treated leather has chemicals added to it to help it break in faster and to keep its shape. However, these gloves generally do not last as long as the leather glove and are difficult to repair.
Other baseball gloves are made of plastic and synthetic materials. These gloves can be easier to break in, but are less durable and can seldom be repaired. These less expensive gloves are usually recommended for younger players since they generally use a baseball glove only for one or two seasons.
