Having a dog is great fun.  Dogs are like family members to the people that own them. They become loyal companions.  However, they are also a responsibility, and some dog breeds are harder to train and take care of than others.  There are so many dog breeds to choose from, and it can be difficult to decide which breed is right for you, your family, and your lifestyle.  Here are some factors to consider if you are trying to decide which dog breed is right for you:

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!

Where you live will definitely play into your decision about what breed of dog to get.  If you live in an apartment, for example, then your first step should be making sure that you are even permitted to have a dog at all.  Many apartment complexes do not permit dogs or they have certain stipulations about the size of dogs that they allow.  If you are allowed to have dogs, you still have to be realistic about narrowing down your search.  Chances are, your neighbors are not going to be happy about having to listen to a dog that barks loudly day and night, so you should look for dog breeds that are not big barkers.  Chinese Crested dogs, for example, will rarely bark, and when they do, it is not distractingly loud.  Secondly, if you live in a small apartment and don¡¯t have a yard (and most apartments are pretty small and don¡¯t have yards), you should make sure to choose a dog breed that is small enough to get sufficient indoor exercise.  Maltese dogs, for example, are perfectly happy with a small living space and moderate indoor exercise.    

TIME

If your lifestyle or career means that you are away from your home most of the day, you should look for a dog breed that is happy to be independent and without its owner for several hours at a time.  There are several dog breeds that get very depressed and lonely when they are left alone, and it is not fair to your prospective puppy to bring him or her into a home that cannot provide adequate attention.  There are also some dog breeds that become agitated and destructive when they are left alone for long periods of time.  Jack Russell Terriers, for instance, are known for ripping up shoes and anything else they can get their crazy little paws and jaws onto when they get fed up with alone-time.  If you don¡¯t have any time to spend with a pet then you really shouldn¡¯t get one.  However, if it is just a matter of being away for a standard eight-hour workday five days a week, there are several breeds that will be happy to entertain themselves while you are gone.  The Shar Pei, for example, is a very loving and devoted dog, but they are also content with being alone.  

KIDS 

If you have children, you should look only at dog breeds that have a reputation for being good with kids.  Not only should you consider that a dog could hurt one of your children, but also, your children could hurt a dog.  The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, for instance, is a dog that doesn¡¯t mix well with young kids.  Chinese Crested dogs are very fragile, especially the hairless ones, and so they shouldn¡¯t be in a home with young kids that might accidentally play too rough.  Akitas can be great family pets, but they are also hard to train and can be aggressive if not trained properly; therefore, they aren¡¯t the best bet for a home with young kids unless you can really provide constant supervision when the dog is around the kids (and that¡¯s a commitment that is much easier said than done). 

OTHER PETS

If you already have other dogs or non-canine pets in your home, you have to be sure that you get a breed of dog that is not known for being aggressive towards other dogs and animals.  Alaskan Malamutes, for example, are known for being very aggressive towards other dogs and smaller pets.  In many cases, if you get a puppy and raise the puppy alongside your other animals, they will all get along just fine.  However, if you are planning to adopt an adult dog, you have to make absolutely certain that you have checked about the breed¡¯s temperament with other animals ¨C you really can¡¯t teach an old dog new tricks in this department!
