There are several different types of dog training collars available on the market today and each has its own benefits and downfalls. The training collar, called the choke collar, comes in three different styles; the nylon, chain, and prong collars. While the nylon and the prong collar are both great training tools this article will address the issues of the chain style choke collar.
The choke chain training collar is designed to correct the dog in the same way that its mother would correct it by grabbing the misbehaving pup by the back of the head. The choke chain puts this same pressure equally around the neck when the dog pulls, then releases immediately when the dog stops pulling or comes back to its owner.
Choke chain training collars come in many sizes and lengths. Keep in mind that the heavier the chain, the less smooth the sliding action will be. Measure your dog¡¯s neck about an inch behind the ears. Make sure that you will be able to slip at least two fingers under the collar. Add about 2 ? inches to that length to get the total length of the collar you will need. When the collar is on the dog there should be 2-3 inches of chain hanging down. Wider linked collars are available for dogs with long hair. Remember to replace the collar as your dog grows.
Note: Choke chain collars should never be used on very young puppies or breeds with flat faces, very short muzzles, or protruding eyes. Choke chains should be used for training only and not worn at all times. An unattended dog could get the chain caught on something and choke itself. Identification or shot tags should not be attached to the choke collar as they can interfere with the sliding action.
To put the collar on your dog, hold the collar by one ring so that the chain is hanging down. Pick up the bottom ring and thread the chain through it. Stand in front of your dog and hold the collar so that it forms a P shape with the bottom of the P on the left hand side. Slip the collar over the dog¡¯s head about an inch below the ears. Pull on the loose ring then let go. Make sure that the chain tightens then loosens immediately. If it remains tight or forms a V when pulled then the collar is on incorrectly. If it is on correctly attach the leash to the loose ring. These instructions are for a dog that is normally walked on the left hand side. If the dog is walked on the right hand side then the P shape would be opposite with the bottom of the P being on the right hand side instead of the left.
To perform a correction with the choke chain training collar, pull the collar firmly and quickly while giving the command ¡°No!¡± with a firm voice. Release the tension on the collar immediately. Don¡¯t continually jerk on the choke chain as this can cause damage to your dog.
Always keep in mind that each dog is different and will react differently to each type of training collar. If your dog doesn¡¯t respond to the collar or pulls continuously despite the pull on the choke chain collar consider using a different type of training collar to prevent injury to your dog.
Studies have shown that improper use of a choke chain training collar is both ineffective and very dangerous. If improperly used, a choke chain can cause serious damage to the dog¡¯s neck, back, and trachea. It is best to have a qualified, experienced instructor show you how and when to use the choke collar. Contact your veterinarian for advice on finding a qualified obedience trainer. This is the best way for you and your dog to learn to work together.
