Say you¡¯re in the market for a new garden gnome. You hop online and begin your search by comparison pricing, looking for deals and using your shopping savvy to get the best buy. After winnowing your searches down you find a site that has a great price, fast shipping and clear purchase policies spelled out. In other words, you¡¯ve found a winner; but you¡¯ve never heard of the company. How can you be sure you won¡¯t be a victim of fraud or have trouble returning the gnome if his little red hat arrives broken? 

This is where a quick trip to the Better Business Bureau website is in order.

The Better Business Bureau, or BBB, was founded in the U.S. in 1912 to promote consumer education and voluntary self-regulation for businesses. They strive for unbiased and fair analysis of over 2 million companies/organizations across the country. They rely on consumers to provide feedback on merchants and for the merchants to operate in an honest fashion.

Using the BBB website to see if the company from which you want to make your purchase is simple and free. Go to their site and click on ¡°Business¡± in the ¡°Check It Out¡± section. This opens a form that allows you to enter the information of the company you are researching. You can enter the company name, the city and state where the company is located, the phone number or the web address.

Let¡¯s say the company you found is called ¡°Big Bob¡¯s Little Gnomes¡±. From that website get as much info as you can; a physical address, a phone number or just copy and paste the web address from your browser and start your search. A list of exact matches and similar sounding business names will appear in the middle of the screen. Companies that are members of the BBB will have the ¡°torch¡± next to their name; these typically have more detailed information.  Find the one that matches the company you are researching and click the company name. The link will take you to the website of the Bureau that has the information of the company. The information that is presented varies widely from company to company and can be as simple as just the company name (usually due to no reports about the company) to very detailed information with charts and other visual aids.

Ok, you¡¯ve found ¡°Big Bob¡¯s Little Gnomes¡± from the list and click the link and are presented with lots of information. What does all the information tell you? Most of the time you will get this:

1) The owner. Who's in charge of the company? This is the name you want if you've exhausted all means of getting your complaint resolved.

2) Physical address and phone numbers. These can be vital when having to contact the company other than a customer service number or making sure a letter can be signed for.

3) BBB membership status. Is the company a member of the BBB? A company has to be in good standing to use the BBB trademark along with their own name. It's a good clue that the company is reputable.

4) Customer experience with the company. This is the main way the BBB rates a company. The BBB will list the number of complaints and the number that have been responded to. Most of the time it will also list the number and types of complaints about the company, the company¡¯s response to the complaints, i.e. resolved, unresolved, good faith attempt, no response and how many complaints occurred over the years. Often there will be a written description of the BBB¡¯s endorsement of a company, usually favorable or unfavorable. A favorable endorsement will be just that; favorable. If they give a company an unfavorable endorsement, they will spell out why; usually giving statistics on the company¡¯s response to complaint.

5) How long the BBB has had a file. If company has been on file with the BBB for many years and gets a favorable endorsement then that's a good sign that you will be treated fairly.   

On rare occasions a company may not be listed at all. This could be that the company is new or there have been no reports at all about it. If this is the case you may want to look at another merchant. A few dollars more from a company that is in the database might save a lot of headache later.

The Better Business Bureau is a great tool to use when looking into making an online purchase. You can quickly find out if a company is lax in its practices and what you can expect as their customer. Use them as a guide and remember that just because a company gets an unfavorable endorsement doesn¡¯t mean it¡¯s not worth buying from; but you will be aware of possible issues.  It¡¯s your hard earned money; make the most of the resources available!
