One of the pitfalls of technology is the fact that we need to constantly replace items with the newest format. The record album, once a staple in most households, has gone the way of the eight-track tape. Along the way we were forced to convert to cassette tapes, but now even tapes are considered obsolete. 

If your previous music collection consisted of dozens of record albums and tapes, it may seem quite expensive to replace all of those albums with the latest music format-- CDs. Luckily, there are some ways to replace your collection without going broke. Here are some tips:

--Join a CD club. These days, CD clubs are a popular way to get your hands on a large number of CDs at once. Membership usually starts with the option to choose a bunch of selections, with the commitment to buy a predetermined number of additional CDs within a specified timeframe (usually one to two years). CD clubs can be a great way to jumpstart or beef up your CD collection. Members-only specials are often another perk of joining (buy one get one free deals are often advertised, although the free CDs usually do not count toward your enrollment agreement). Once you fulfill your enrollment commitment, you have the option of canceling your membership in the club. Before you join, be sure to peruse the list of CDs that the club offers to make sure they have titles that you are looking for. You can find CD club offers in popular music magazines or online.

-- Legal downloads. There are many online sites available from which you can legally download you favorite tunes or entire albums.  Most digital songs cost under one dollar each-- entire albums can cost even less per song. Once downloaded, you can burn the songs to CD format-- you will need a computer equipped with CD burning software (often a standard function on most new computers). You can also leave the songs on your computer and queue them up whenever you¡¯re in the mood.

--Greatest hits compilations. Do you own six Bon Jovi albums but only listen to one or two songs on each of them? Maybe a greatest hits compilation CD is all you really need! Most major recording artists have released a greatest hits collection at some point in their career. Check to see if your favorite artists have released one, and eliminate the need to purchase several different CDs just to get a few of your favorite songs. This idea will save you money and eliminate the clutter of having extra CDs that you really don¡¯t need.

-- Check online auction sites and yard sales for used CDs. CDs are a hot seller online and at yard sales. And because CDs aren¡¯t as fragile as your old record albums, you don¡¯t have to worry about purchasing something that is scratched or worn out. Check online for your favorite titles-- it may be the cheapest way you can find to replace your favorite albums.

-- Sell you old albums for store credit. Collectors still love vinyl, so if your old LP¡¯s are in good shape, consider selling them to a reputable record dealer. You may be able to obtain credit toward the CD version of albums that are on your list, or, at the very least, walk out of the store with a pocket full of cash.
