Creating scrapbooks is so much fun but can become a little bit expensive. Newer and nicer scrapbook embellishments have given crafting fanatics lots of new choices from which to choose. There are alternatives to spending so much money, though, and you¡¯ll end up with some of the most beautiful scrapbooks ever.
One thing you can use to replace expensive background papers is spray dye. The dyes are made for tie-dying tee shirts and a little goes a long way. Each bottle will literally do hundreds of papers. Instead of purchasing background papers remove the paper that comes between the page protectors. Spray on the dye but don¡¯t get the paper drenching wet. Allow to dry thoroughly before returning to its place in the book. Depleted mylar balloons can be folded or cut to make striking background papers. Holiday or birthday gift-wrapping paper works great, too. Use the paper as background or simply cut words and pictures from the paper.
Plastic tablecloth sections, lace from an old pillowcase, tee shirt designs, bandanas, and even a cd can be used in scrapbooks. Place the picture on the page and affix the cd over the top. They must be the type that has the clear center. If not, glue the picture on top of the cd.
Cut the corners off of envelopes that arrive in the mail to use for pasting photos in the book. If white isn¡¯t the color you want spray them with the spray dye and allow to dry. Envelopes make great pockets too. Glue the envelope closed then paste the bottom and sides to the book to make a pocket. You can also glue the front of the envelope to the page and leave flap where it will open to show what¡¯s inside. And don¡¯t throw away the card that came in the envelope. It will also make a great pocket. If it has writing on it, like ¡°Happy Birthday¡±, use it on a birthday scrap page. If the card is long cut it in half before gluing to the page. Use pictures of scenery during a recent vacation as pockets. Photos that are long and rectangular work better than square pictures. Valentines work in a similar manner.
Sometimes when you purchase items, like a doll, the box includes a window through which the toy can be seen. This clear plastic makes great ¡°glass¡± for your scrapbook. Cut a frame from cloth, paper or cardboard then use the clear plastic as the glass for a beautiful picture frame. Use ribbon or lines of fabric paint to outline the frame then the glass to prevent raw edges from showing. You can also cut a shape from the clear plastic and simply outline it with your choice of perimeters. Or remove the cardboard inside of jar lids, paint or cover with fabric, then use the clear plastic to cover the photo.
Snip the shaft from buttons and use them for page corners. This raises the pages only slightly and makes it easier to turn them without tearing up the edges. The buttons come in shapes of footballs, ballerinas and even pets. Make sure the button is the type that will lay fairly flat after removal of the shaft.
The main rule of scrapbook making is to save absolutely everything. Before you toss leftover wallpaper, silk flowers, shelf paper or even the pattern on a paper towel, think scrapbooks. |
