Ten years ago, your average cellular phone weighed almost two pounds, and the most advanced feature it had was the ability to vibrate instead of ring. It was expensive, obvious, and most of all, convenient. We wonder today how we ever did without one.
With all of the features available on cellular phones today, probably the most amazing feature is the camera option. Now, not only is your phone discreet, with so many ring tones you can actually assign a different one to each caller on your list, but you also have the capability to take a picture and associate it with that specialty ring, so that your caller¡¯s face pops up when he or she calls. So, let¡¯s discuss the camera option here.
The way the camera works is that a tiny lens is actually built into the outside cover of the earpiece of your phone. These tiny lenses have been used in surveillance equipment for years, but up until now, were not readily available to the public. When a designated button on the phone is pressed, the display window of the phone will switch over to the viewfinder of the camera, and pressing the button will snap the photo. The image is then stored in either built in or removable memory, depending on the camera, and the photo can either be sent to another user, stored on your phone, or stored on a server, depending on your plan. Today, you can bring your camera virtually anywhere undetected and snap away, using options such as shutter silence. However, if you don¡¯t know how to choose, you may not be able to view what you snap.
The first camera phone was introduced in 2000, in Japan. It featured a .31 megapixel camera. Today, users can take advantage of technology which offers up to 3 megapixel cameras, and some video cameras are also being introduced. If you are a serious photographer, Samsung makes a phone, the SGH-D410, which offers 3 megapixel resolution, plus the ability to film short video clips, for around 475.00. For the more average user, the LG VX6000, which features 3 resolution modes and a built-in zoom, is probably just what you need. Check with your local cellular dealer to find out which providers are offering the best deals on camera phones. You may be able to score one quickly and easily just for signing up. If not, they can cost anywhere from 49.00 up to 495.00.
Be aware that there are guidelines concerning the use of these nifty little phones. Many gyms and spas do not allow them inside their businesses. Likewise, they may not be allowed into courtrooms or other federal buildings. You may be put into a situation where you will have to leave your expensive new phone in the hands of a security guard, who may have you sign a waiver relieving him of the responsibility of holding it. Either that or you may find yourself hiking back to wherever you parked your car to stow it there.
Exercise caution when considering giving one of these phones to a teenager. They are not only easily lost or stolen, due to their high popularity, but privacy laws also pertain to school grounds, particularly gyms and other sensitive areas. Your child may have their camera phone confiscated or lost, or stolen.
Remember, a phone is a phone, and a camera is a camera. For more serious photographers, there is no substitution for a stand alone camera, but camera phones, with their ease of use, and spontaneity, are just a real fun gadget. Buy with your head- don¡¯t be persuaded to buy a 300.00 phone just for that 2 megapixel lens. Your phone should also feature good service and affordable plans. Insurance for your phone is usually available through the provider, and is a good investment, particularly if you have spent more than 49.00 for your camera phone.
Keeping these guidelines in mind, the ease of use and reward of having a camera just when you find yourself saying, ¡°Oh, if I only had a camera¡±, may far outweigh the cost and restrictions outlined here. Some cell phone aficionados predict that within five years, all cellular phones will have camera ability, as well as e-mail and web access.
