Before putting your cat on a weight plan, it is important that you know how to assess your cat¡¯s current weight. First, feel the cat¡¯s rib cage; on an ideal cat you should be able to easily feel the ribs but not see them. Next, while your cat is standing, look at him from above; there should be a slight indentation just behind the rib cage that implies an hourglass shape. Lastly, feel the cat¡¯s belly and hips. If the belly protrudes or there is more than a light layer of flesh around his hips, your cat is probably overweight.
There are many reasons to help your cat maintain a healthy weight. Just like humans, overweight cats have a higher risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, and liver and joint problems. As always, preventative maintenance is best and less costly, so keeping your pet at a healthy weight is very important. If your cat is severely obese, you should consult your veterinarian before putting him on a weight loss program. There are serious diseases in cats that could trigger weight gain and your veterinarian will be able to rule out those diseases as well as prescribe a customized diet plan. If you are only concerned about a couple of pounds, there are a few minor changes you can make in your cat¡¯s routine to help him lose the extra weight.
The first thing is to cut out table scraps and ¡°people food.¡± We are very tempted to feed our pets what we eat because they enjoy it and we love them, but human food typically has a lot more calories and fat than is good for your cat to intake. In addition, cat digestive systems function differently than human digestive systems, so they may not be able to digest everything we eat. One of the quickest ways to help your cat lose weight is to stop feeding him your leftovers.
When you are feeding your cat his regular cat food, pay attention to how much you feed at one time. Most food packages give a guide of how much your pet should be eating in a serving, and you should measure the food according to that guide in order to maintain consistency in portion size and avoid the temptation of giving him a little extra each time. Many, many cat owners simply leave the food out for their cats all day long; this is fine as long as you are not feeding more than the cat should consume in one day. If you refill the bowl every time it is empty (more than once a day), you are probably feeding too much. Cats love to eat, and they will eat as long as there is food, so pay attention to how much he is eating and do not overindulge.
It is also good to maintain a consistent feeding schedule so that your cat knows when to expect food. If you leave food for your cat all day long, make a habit of filling the bowl at the same time each day, the same amount each day, and do not refill it when it is not time. If you have a twice a day schedule, make sure you are feeding at the same times each day and the same portion sizes. Not only will this get your cat into a healthy routine, it will help you better monitor how much he is eating. You may also want to consider a diet cat food, especially if you feel like you are depriving your furry friend. Many weight management formulas of cat food are lower in fat and calories and higher in fiber, so they allow you to feed a more generous portion without harming your animal¡¯s health. However, carefully read labels and consult your veterinarian before switching to a weight management cat food to ensure that your cat is getting all the proper nutrients.
Another way to help your cat lose weight is to play with him! Spending time each day playing will add much needed exercise to they cat¡¯s daily routine. This is especially true if you only have one cat that lies around all day while you are not home. Two cats will usually play with each other, but one cat needs you to play with him to make sure he gets plenty of exercise. Try having him chase a toy or a string; even the most stubborn cats can seldom resist a string.
Just like humans, diet and exercise are the keys to helping your cat maintain a healthy weight, so spend a little extra time each day playing with him and pay attention to how much you feed him as well as how much he eats. |
