If your cat is an outdoor cat, you are probably often checking him for fleas.  However, even indoor cats can occasionally pick up fleas.  If you own a cat, you should always know what to look for, especially if your cat is allergic to fleas (and that can happen).

If your cat has fleas, he will tend to scratch more ¨C than may be your first sign.  However, you likely won¡¯t catch him scratching a lot more than usual unless you are around him a lot.  You may notice, though, when he begins to act ¡°different.¡±  He may seem quieter or less attention-seeking than usual.

If your pet¡¯s behavior changes, something is wrong.  Try to figure out what¡¯s going on.  Your pet cannot use words or facial expressions to say he is miserable, so he will show you through his behavior.

Your cat may begin to eat less than usual, and may throw up some of what he eats (not hairballs).  He may also suddenly have trouble making it to the litter box, or possibly not even try to reach the litter box.  He may have diarrhea (which may be why he doesn¡¯t try to make it to the litter box).

All of these are potentially signs of fleas.  The telltale sign is when you notice that some of the cat¡¯s hair is missing, often times on the back, near the tail (the hair may also thin in other areas.  As soon as you notice any hair thinning, even before you notice any scabbing, then it¡¯s time to take the cat to the vet).  If the hair looks very thin, especially in that area, and then you begin to notice the cat has a lot of scabbing and scab-like areas, there are definitely fleas.

Fleas hurt the cat first by biting, which can cause bleeding and scabbing, as well as hair loss.  Then, when they scratch, it can cause further pain and scabbing.  This is a cat that is highly infested with fleas and needs to see a vet right away.

Once you¡¯ve seen a vet, expect your cat to stay miserable for a couple days, but to improve.  A cat that is allergic to fleas will display all of these symptoms to a more extreme degree, and will need an oral antibiotic in addition to the flea medication. 

Even if you have only one cat with fleas, ALL of your cats will have to take flea medication for at least two months (the medication is only applied once a month, so it¡¯s not that bad).  The medication must be applied to the back of the neck, because the cats can¡¯t lick or scratch that area (so they can¡¯t remove the medication).

Some vets may recommend a flea bath if the cat is badly infested, but this likely isn¡¯t necessary, even for a cat that is allergic.  Be gentle in handling a cat with fleas; don¡¯t injure the scabbed spots.  The cat is miserable and ill and should be left alone to sleep as long as he needs.

Hopefully, fleas will never infest your precious animal.  In case they do, these are the signs to look for.
