Before this year I had never even heard of a hermit crab. I would have lumped them up with the type of crabs you eat at a seafood restaurant. Then, out of the blue, my friend told me her twin daughters raised hermit crabs and then, a few weeks later, I learned my nephew had just bought a hermit crab. They seemed to be all the rage! If you are contemplating getting one of these for a pet or have a child who has been begging for one, here is some information on how to care of your new hermit crab.

When we think of a hermit crab, we may think of a cranky old crab that lives alone and shuns other crabs. On the contrary, hermit crabs actually travel in packs as they search together for food and new shells to fill. For this reason, many experienced ¡°crabbers¡± suggest you buy at least two hermit crabs so they can keep each other company in their new home. 

When you get your hermit crabs, the first thing you will want to get for them is a comfortable and roomy home. Some pet stores will recommend something known as a critter carrier, but crabbers feel that, while for transporting these carriers work just fine, in the long run, an aquarium that is at least ten gallons will work best for a few crabs. The rule of thumb when it comes to room for your crabs is to have enough room for the crabs¡¯ food, water, toys, shells and the crabs themselves. There should also be a little extra room for the crabs to move around or run in, so they can expend some energy. The bottom of the cage should be lined with sand or gravel. Be sure to ask your pet store what works best for your crabs. Inside the crabs¡¯ new home, the temperature should remain anywhere from seventy to seventy-eight degrees. Also, since you want to duplicate the tropical environment of a hermit crab¡¯s natural habitat, the relative humidity should be at seventy percent. 

The water dish should contain water that has been dechlorinated, like bottled or filter water. Pet stores also sell substances used to help dechlorinate water, so speak to one of the associates there who will recommend a good one. The water dish should always be kept clean and full and should not be deep enough that a smaller crap could drown in it, since most crabs simply like to drop themselves into the dish. 

It may sound silly, but your hermit crab will need to be bathed at least once a week. This helps to moisten their gills. Again, you will need to only use water that has been dechlorinated and that is at room temperature. You can simply use a small bowl to bathe your crabs. Once the bowl is full, place your crab upside down in the bowl. More than likely, your crab will rush out of his shell, but if he is being shy, let him stay in the water for about three minutes, and then take him out. Allow your crab to dry out, which he will quickly do, as freshly bathed crabs suddenly become energized. As with any new animal, there is much to learn about a new pet. Be sure to do some research on hermit crabs before bringing one into your home. Speak to your local pet store about books you can read or guidelines you can follow before you decide to commit to a hermit crab as a pet.
