Your inflatable boat or canoe will last for many years if cared properly, but there are special considerations you should be aware of with inflatables.
Following your boat manufacturer*s instructions and psi recommendations is extremely important. An underinflated boat is more susceptible to fabric tears because it will catch more easily on rocks and other objects in the water. An overinflated boat will weaken and possibly rip at the seams, and is in danger of exploding (something you don*t want when you*re in the middle of a lake!) Although modern boats can withstand some overinflation, it is unwise to make a habit of it as the integrity of the seams and valves will be damaged in the long run. Very often, the manufacturer*s warranty will not cover damage due to under or over-inflation.
Be aware that if you fill your boat in the cool morning to the manufacturer*s recommended psi, the air in the tubes will expand in the heat of the sun as the day goes on, especially if you pull your boat out of the water for a break. Letting a little air out will bring it back down to a correct pressure. Your boat should have a little ※give§ to it, and be neither excessively squishy, nor overly hard. Extreme altitude changes will also affect pressure 每 at high altitudes pressure increases just as it will in hot temperatures.
Use commonsense precautions while enjoying your boat. Become familiar with the waters you are using 每 know where high, sharp rocks, underwater beaver dams and strong currents lie, and exercise caution in unfamilar waters. When offloading and inflating your boat, use a tarp to inflate it on, and carry it rather than dragging it to the water. When the boat is not in use, carry it to shore and set it on a smooth area, if possible. Leaving it moored subjects it to the rocking water and danger of abrasion against stones and sand.
Proper storage and transportation of your boat also increases longevity. Once deflated, don*t roll or fold it too tightly as this can cause cracks in the folds. The boat should be thoroughly cleaned and free of sand and debris before even short-term storage or transport. It is generally recommended the boat be rolled in a tarp or heavy plastic sheeting to protect it from abrasions. Valves and valve assemblies should also be rinsed with clean water to remove sand and grit. If your boat needs to be tied down for transportation, avoid using ropes or bungee cords, which can abrade and rub weak spots on the fabric. Use straps instead.
When transporting it, don*t load anything heavy on top and be careful about adjacent sharp objects which could puncture it, especially in the back of a truck or van where cargo is more likely to shift. When transporting your boat via airline, it is wisest to use a proper boat storage bag, since you will have no control over loading and unloading procedures, and a cargo hold can be an inhospitable environment for a poorly-protected inflatable watercraft!
If you are transporting your boat a short distance and don*t plan on deflating it completely, bleed off some of the air pressure first and again, make sure it will not be punctured or abraded by other cargo.
For long term storage, your boat must be completely dry inside and out to prevent mildew forming inside the tubes. Leave a little natural air in the tubes to facilitate drying. Vacuum and clean all surfaces thoroughly 每 even the smallest crumb of leftover food may attract mice, who will often chew the material. If there*s a possibility rodents may get into your stored boat, store some rodent deterrent with it, taking care the deterrent isn*t available to household pets.
Use the manufacturer-recommended sealant to keep the boat fabric supple during storage, not regular silicone sprays and coatings which can damage the fabric. Ideally, your boat should be stored unfolded in a cool, dry area. If space is a concern, roll or fold it loosely in a bag or tarp. Don*t store it in the attic or anywhere that may get very hot, since that will prematurely dry out the fabric.
When setting up your boat after long term storage, again clean all surfaces with mild soapy water. Reapply the sealant 每 if you use your boat or canoe regularly, this should be done as ongoing maintanance throughout the year.
