Card games are becoming more and more popular with younger groups of kids.  Even teenagers, college students, and adults enjoy playing gin, poker, blackjack, hearts, and several other card games.  Due to the popularity of these games, manufacturers are able to sell poker tables and other card tables at a higher price.  You can make your own card table with your kids, though!  If you want to make your own card table, make sure you have the following materials:

Square folding table

Large sheet of felt

Coasters

Elmer¡¯s glue

Deck of cards

Step One: Unfold the legs of the square table so that it is upright.  These tables are available at most household supply stores or home improvement stores, and they are very inexpensive.  Make sure the table is safely assembled before continuing.

Step Two: Using Elmer¡¯s Glue, attach a large sheet of green felt to the top of the table.  You should be able to find a large sheet of felt at your local craft supply store or online.  If you can¡¯t find a sheet large enough, piece together several smaller sheets.  Do not use too much glue, as it can bleed through the felt and cause darker, crusty patches on the felt.  Apply the glue evenly over the top of the table, preferably in a spiral that goes from the outside toward the inside.  Press the felt down onto the table top and wait for the glue to dry.

Step Three: Once the glue has completely dried, trim around the edges of the table to remove the excess felt.

Step Four: Determine how many ¡°place¡± settings you would like at your table, depending on how many people would usually be playing cards.  The best numbers would be between four and eight.  When you have decided the number, take out your deck of cards.  Select four cards for each person, and arrange them face down in a pattern of your choice.  This is going to be the decorative base for your coasters.  Try stacking the cards on top of each other so that they fan out.  Then, glue the set of four cards down onto the felt, equidistant from each other based on how many settings you are making.  Wait for the glue to dry.  

Step Five: Glue a coaster on top of each card setting you just made.  Center the coaster as much as possible in the center of the cards.  Wait for the glue to dry.  When it has dried, you have your own card table!  Try using some of the following tips to further personalize your card table or card night:

-Arrange black, card-sized pieces of felt according to the standard procedure for the card games you like to play.  For example, if you are a fan of Texas Hold ¡®Em poker, arrange the five cards for the flop, turn, and river in the middle of the table.  These will serve as place holders for those cards when you are playing, and make the table look more decorative when you are not playing.

-Try decorating the edge of the table with leftover cards.  Depending on the thickness of your table, you might have to do this on the top of your table or on the side.  Remember to keep the cards face down or use a different style of cards than you normally use, as they might get confused with active cards when playing a game.

-Try making your own poker chips!  This can be done using clay found at a craft store and baking it.  Follow the directions included with the clay to find out the necessary thickness of the clay and approximate baking times.
