Choosing a Camping Stove: Gas, Propane, or Wood?

Thinking about camping often lends itself to thoughts of cooking over an open fire, roasting marshmallows as fellow campers tell stories and laugh well into the moonlit hours. The catch is that while cooking on a wood fire is a romantic notion, nowadays, many parks severely limit or ban the burning of wood fires in camp due to risk of forest fires. Also, when wood is wet or hard to find, making a small fire for a cup of boiling water could be tough, if not impossible. Because of these reasons, it often is more convenient and ideal to take along a gas or propane portable camp stove. 

There are a few simple steps you can take to make sure you purchase a camp stove that fits your needs and your budget.

Size and weight

Where and when you plan to use your camp stove will dictate the size and weight you can handle and will want to purchase. If you are a kayaker, you can take along a larger stove that may have up to two or three burners to cook more than one dish at a time and could weigh a few pounds. However, backcountry backpackers who literally carry everything they take with them on their backs will want to find a small, minimalist stove that weighs just a few ounces. Removable fuel tanks allow the stove to be taken apart and packed in a way that reduces bulkiness; something of extreme importance to backpackers. One thing to note is that when you research stoves, the manufacturer will list the weight. The weight listed includes only the burner and any other attached material ¨C it does NOT include the weight of the fuel tank you will need to attach. 

Type of fuel

The type of fuel you purchase also is dependent on how and where you plan to use your stove. Liquid fuels are heavier than other types of fuels, but also are inexpensive and available at most camp stores or even well-stocked markets throughout the United States and Canada.  The most common form found in North America is called ¡°white gas¡± and it burns pretty cleanly. Stoves that use liquid fuels usually are good and dependable at any temperature or altitude, even in windy or freezing conditions.

Other fuels come in cartridges of compressed gasses rather than small tanks of liquid gas. These include butane, propane, and iso-butane. The cartridges usually are smaller and lighter than liquid gas tanks. The cartridge fueled stoves burn cleanly and are good at holding a steady temperature for simmering.  Fuels that are compressed into cartridges are not as reliable for cooking at extreme cold temperatures, so may not be good at high altitudes where 40-degree F to near freezing temperatures may exist. Since these types of stoves generally consist of a burner that twists onto the top of the canister, wind can cause trouble with keeping the flame lit. Canisters usually have automatic valves that re-seal the canister when it is detached from the stove, so that you can carry it around without fear of spillage. 

Some final tips:

- Ask for information regarding ease of use, ease of clean-up, ease of lighting, and disposal of empty fuel containers.

- If you plan to travel internationally, make sure that the stove you purchase uses fuels that will be able to be purchased in the countries you will visit.

- Find out the return process and read the warranty. If you end up with a stove that is defective or does not fit your needs, make sure you will not be stuck. Many camping stores will work to make sure your needs are met even if it means exchanging one stove for another after purchase. 

- Don¡¯t forget to pick up a sturdy pot and utensils, as well as waterproof matches so that you will be able to use your stove no matter what the conditions.
