For beginners there are some basic types of golf clubs required in order to be even moderately effective when playing this maddeningly addictive sport. These basic clubs include woods and wedges.

     There are typically four types of wedges. These clubs are used mostly for hits out of sand bunkers or shots to the green.

     A gap wedge splits the difference between a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. Loft is between 50 and 52 degrees. Loft is the angle of the club head. It determines whether the golf ball flies higher or flatter. A gap wedge can be used for areas on the golf course where other wedges would not work.

     Pitching wedges are used for the longest shots to get to the green. Loft is usually between 45 and 51 degrees. These clubs combine power, loft, and some measure of finesse.

     A sand wedge isused mostly for play out of a sandy area or sand traps and bunkers. It can also be used for shorter shots on the green where a lot of loft is needed. The loft of the sand wedge is usually between 53 and 56 degrees.

     The lob wedge is used for really close shots on the green or where the ball needs to be hit over a small hill or sand trap. It has the highest loft which usually runs between 60 and 65 degrees.

     Woods are used to hit the golf ball a long way, usually off the tee and long shots to the green. A typical golf bag for a beginner would hold a driver, a number three, number five, number seven, and a number nine wood. The smaller the number the heavier the head and thus the longer the club will hit the ball. Some of these woods are easier to use than irons ecause it takes greater expertise to hit true at first when using irons.

     The standard lengths of woods are 43 to 43 and 1/2 inches but can vary depending on the heighth of the player. If the player is short or tall they must be custom fit. The way to do this is by measuring the distance from their wrist to the floor while standing.

     These clubs are called woods because at first they were made out of wood. Modern clubs can be produced from steel, titanium, plastics, or carbon composits. If they are made from wood it comes from the persimmon tree. The club shafts are made of steel or graphite with leather or rubber handgrips.

      Woods also have varying degrees of loft. Golfers who posess a slower velocity golf swing will probably need a club with a heavier head and a higher angle of loft. Those players with a faster swing need a club with a lighter head and a lower angle of loft.

     The price of both clubs range from $15.00 to many hundreds of dollars. It is usually wise for beginners to start off with the lower priced clubs until more expert at their game. Many golf instructors state that the good use of a club is more important than the cost.
