Making a simple toy chest for a child can be a fun family project or a special gift. Making a toy chest is a simple project that requires few tools and supplies. You can easily find everything you need at a local home improvement store. In four steps you will have a new homemade toy chest.
Supplies:
5-6 pieces of wood
nails or screws
hammer or drill
paint/varnish
sandpaper
tape measure
Optional: hinges, saw
Before you begin you will need to decide the measurements for your toy chest. A good basic rectangular shape works well. The height measurement should be based on the smallest child that will be using the toy chest. Measure from the child's waist to the floor for the height measurement. The width is a personal preference but about 2 feet by 4 feet works well. If you are wanting a lid you will use 6 pieces of wood and need the hinges to attach it. Lids are not recommended for children under five.
Step One: Gather the supplies and tools.
You can choose to use a hammer or drill. If using a drill you should look for flat head screws so they lay flat against the wood.
The wood you choose is your own personal choice. You can use plywood or any kind of wood that can be cut to the dimensions you need. Either have the wood precut for you or cut it to the correct measurements. You should end up with three different sizes of wood: two long cuts, two short cuts and one (or two pieces, if adding a lid) cut to measure the height and widths of the other two pieces.
Step Two: Assembly.
Start by taking a short side piece and a long front or back piece. Nail or screw them together at a 90 degree angle. Use three to four nails or screws. Make sure you are attaching them with at both of their "height" sides. Add the other long piece to the other side of the short piece at a 90 degree angle. Finish the rectangle shape with the last short piece.
Now add the bottom of the box by securing it with nails or screws on top of the rectangle box.
f you are adding a lid go ahead and position the hinges on the box and secure into place. Put the lid on the box and nail or screw the hinges to the lid. Check that it opens and closes easily.
Step Three: Paint or Varnish
If you have used a wood that can be sanded, do so now to rid the chest of wood splinters. If you have used a plywood the paint should seal it enough to prevent splinters, but you can smooth out the corners with sand paper.
You can now paint or varnish the toy chest as you wish. If this is a family project try adding handprints of the children or let them write their names. Don't forget to put the date on the bottom, so the toy chest can become a beloved family heirloom.
Now you have built a simple toy chest. Wait for the paint to dry and fill it up with toys. Have fun! |
