A wheelchair ramp is an ideal solution for a disabled person to get into, or out of, their home. Of course, people who are wheelchair bound cannot navigate an entrance any other way. You can easily build a long, straight ramp on your home if you have some basic tools, a supply of wood, and a plan. 

The first thing you need to do, though, before you start this project, is to check with your local codes and permits office. You may need to purchase a building permit for this type of project.

After that legality is taken care of, you'll need to start planning your wheelchair ramp. The best way to do this is with a pen and a pencil or with a computer drawing program. But, there are more legalities to deal with in regards to the design. Such as, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has specific rules and guidelines on how a safe and accessible ramp should be built. For example, the entire length of the ramp must slope no more than one inch per every foot. Actually, the less the slope, the better, according to the ADA. 

Also, according to the established rules and regulations, if the rise of your proposed ramp will be  higher than six inches, then you'll need to install hand rails on each side. These will need to be one and a half inches away from the side. The tops of the hand rails will also need to be between thirty four and thirty eight inches above the floor of the ramp. However you install the hand rails onto the wheelchair ramp, they must be stationary so they cannot turn. And finally, the ends of the hand rails must be rounded.       

Now that you have learned about the slope, rise, and hand rails of the wheelchair ramp, you can continue on with your plan. The Americans with Disabilities Act specifies that the ramp must have a clearance of thirty six inches from any one side to the other. Thirty six inches will allow a standard wheelchair to move freely up and down the ramp. However, if the disabled person uses a larger wheelchair, then you will need to extend the width of the ramp to fit.    

And, finally, you'll need to work into the plan two level landings. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires a landing be installed at each end of the ramp. They need to be, of course, the same width as the ramp. However, they are required to be built at least five feet in length.            

Of course, your wheelchair ramp will need to be built from the front or back entrance of your house. If it's not going to be used on a regular basis, you might consider building it so it can be moved when it's not in use.     

After you have made your plans, and you are ready to begin the actual construction, you'll want to first build the base. A combination of 2X6 boards and pressure treated 2X4 boards will work well.   

You'll also need to use 2X6 pressure treated boards for the floor of the wheelchair ramp. You'll want to install the boards horizontally down the length of the ramp. The spaces in between each board will give the wheels of the wheelchair something to grab onto. Not only that, but they will also allow rain, melted snow, et cetera, to drain from the wooden ramp surface.  

As for the hardware and fasteners you'll need, make sure that use galvanized nails or wood screws so they don't rust. 

These are the basic specifications for building a long, straight ramp. However, if you need to build a ramp that has turns in it, or is otherwise not completely straight, then you'll need to seek additional information. You can contact the United States Department of Justice and request the ADA guide book to find out more specific rules and regulations.
